The market for Googles Android phone just shrunk!
OCTOBER 26, 2008 |
Sprint unhappy with Googles Android phone - needs an iPhone killer
fast
AT&T has been hoarding the successful iPhone for sometime while other
carriers such as Sprint suffers in the smartphone market. Sprint has
been aggressively looking to provide a real competitor to the iPhone.
There are other phones on the market with touchscreen capability, like
the Samsung Instinct. However, no other phone on the market equals the
Internet capabilities of the iPhone.
Sprint desperately needs a new smart phone to compete with AT&T to
claim its stake in the growing mobile data market in the US. Sprint
has been closely working with Google on the highly anticipated Android
platform for cell phones. The company not only wants to utilize the
platform, but also wants to develop a distinct service to rival that
of the iPhones.
However, things are not going as smoothly as anticipated for Sprint.
According to Silicon Ally Insider, Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, in a
recent conference stated that the the Google Android is not yet good
enough to put the Sprint brand on it. This comment was surprising,
that Hesse would publicly talk down the Android after carefully
integrating it into Sprints future road map.
Sprint has been planing on getting an Android phone out by this
Chirstmas to compete with the iPhone. However, it seems that T-
Mobiles launch is consuming enough of Googles attention to hamper
Sprints plans. Due to circumstances it looks like Sprint wont be
launching the Android phone this holiday season.
Apparently, Sprint is not happy about playing second fiddle for
Android. Sprints stance seems to be that the platform does not
deserve the companys logo on it yet. Despite some rough areas with
the Google Android, the platform is definitely more advanced then most
of the offerings out on the market currently.
One of the greatest aspects about the platform is its evolving feature
set via updates. Sprint could theoretically rush the Android out to
the market then plan on developing its brand specific service with
future updates down the road. As it is now, we will just have to wait
and see what Sprint plans on offering this holiday season to compete
with the iPhone.

What he fails to see is that there is no "Android Phone", like his iPhone.
Android is an OPERATING SYSTEM that happens to run on phones, not just one
but there will be a whole RANGE of phones with Android as OS.
Motorola, is dumping Linux, Java and other phone OSs and is going to run
their whole line on Android! The news was full of these articles today,
but, of course, our Apple fanbois wouldn't report that.....
What's going to be neat is that T-mobile's G1 will run the same 3rd party
apps as the new Motorola line of Android powered phones....and will have
the same Google toy access.
Motorola was running Symbian until rival Nokia bought the OS lock, stock
and barrel, recently. They'll drop it, now, for Android.

Well, everybody is calling it the Google phone or the Android phone.
It's just us techno-geeks who know the real name.

Motorola's mobile unit is hurting. Hopefully, Android will help.

I'm guessing that we'll see some very unique apps coming our way
because of the open-source nature of the thing. I got my G1 the day
before they were released for sale, and I love it.

Sprint was not saying they will never use this OS, simply that it is
not quite what they are looking for as it it today.
As there are improvements made to the OS, and it becomes more robust,
I am confident they will take another look.
I would not be surprised if within the next 6-8 months there will be a
Sprint device running the Android OS. Or at least
one in development at that time. Personally, I'd prefer them to take
their time, make sure it is right before releasing it.
As I am sure that anyone that has purchased the "next big thing" only
to find out it needed more bench testing before
release can attest to.
