    (from Nextels' webite)
Nextel is preparing to offer Wireless Local Number Portability (WLNP),
the ability to switch wireless carriers without giving up your existing
    phone numbers.

The service lets you come to Nextel and take advantage of Nextel's
great services – Nationwide Direct ConnectSM coast-to-coast
    walkie-talkie service, Group ConnectSM one-to-many walkie-talkie
service and Nextel Online® – without having to tell everyone that you
    have a new phone number!

This ability to bring your current wireless or landline (business or
home) phone number to Nextel will begin November 24, 2003.*
Coming to Nextel has never been so easy.

Starting November 24, here's what you can do:

Contact Nextel to bring your current number to Nextel – you don't need
    to contact your current carrier!

If you're a new Nextel customer, choose your phone and rate plan.
    Existing Nextel customers can:
Activate a new Nextel phone with your current number
Replace your current Nextel number with the number you're bringing to
    Nextel
Activate a second phone line with the number you're bringing with
    Nextel's Alternate Line Service

Once your request is processed your phone number will be activated on
your Nextel handset and your service with your former carrier will be
automatically deactivated. In most cases, the activation period is
expected to take several hours to complete.**
    * WLNP may not be available in all markets and from all
    telecommunications providers. Other limitations apply.

** Early termination and other fees from your former carrier may
    apply.

Looks like they are going to use WLNP as a sales tool.

Hahaha. Does anyone even imagine that carriers like Sprint are going to give up
a phone number within hours? Sprint's current position, as I understand it, is
to hold the phone number until the subscriber pays his last bill. Since Sprint
is incapable of computing a phone bill on the fly, that means waiting until the
end of the billing period, then a few more days for Sprint's billing true-up.

Unless the FCC issues some forceful regulations very soon, moving your number to
a new carrier may take up to a month. And believe it or not, in other forums
Sprint employees have actually been defending this willful sloth. One Sprint
employee said, "All you have to do is plan your move a couple weeks in advance."
    (!)

One of the good things that can be said about Sprint is that it has some
    loyal employees.

    Re: NEXTEL and WLNP

I called NEXTEL today to inquire about switching plans after WLNP comes
into effect. The CSR asked me what my current plan was with SPRINTPCS
and how much I was paying. I told him, and he came back with their
competitive plan (about $25.00 more than I am paying with SPRINT, no 7
p.m. n&w, but 800 anytime minutes instead of 500). I thanked him and
told him I wasn't interested as I was still under contract with SPRINT
and even if I wasn't, I would wait until WLNP was in effect before
changing carriers. This is where he got aggressive...
He offered me $200.00 rebates on each of the 4 phones I would purchase,
and he said they would also waive the activation fee. He also told me
that if I wanted to switch now, NEXTEL would issue me temporary numbers
until the end of November. He told me to call SPRINT and put my account
on a vacation plan until then, and I would have no ETF with them once
the numbers could be carried over to NEXTEL, and the account was
    cancelled.
I wonder what kind of deals and tricks these carriers are going to come
up with to retain or entice business once this thing happens if they
    are doing this now?
