SMS...

Does anyone know if either the Samsung A500 or the Sanyo 8100 have SMS
enabled on them for when Sprint starts to provide the service?

shouldn't. SMS requires different hardware than data or voice. You
should be able to download an application that lets the phone work
similar to sms via shortmail. Some of the free sites offer it.

You do no one any favor telling them Shortmail is similar to SMS.

Should I tell them to use their landline, cause its similar to a cell
phone?

Shortmail is a variant of SMS, with the most striking difference being
a web interfece instead of a phone/integrated interface.

I don't know how he was not helping anyone by pointing that out...

That isn't what he said at all, Philly. He said there is an application=20
that allows your phone to act like it's doing SMS, and that the=20
application uses Shortmail to send the message.

Well then your life must be coming to an end pretty soon since Sprint is
already releasing phones that have sms compatible software (Nokia 3588i,
etc.)... which is solid proof the sms is coming real soon.

Don't get me wrong Eric, I am hoping they get it as well, especially
cross-network SMS which who knows if it will happen. International SMS would
be even better. I was one of those holding out for the I700, so I have
learned the hard way to take everything said about Sprints releases with a
grain of salt.

Can't say I blame you. Since the 3588i is advertising the support, I
think it's safe to report that MO-SMS is still in the official schedule.

I would say the most striking difference is its (Short Mail)
unreliability, and the time lag in creating and sending messages.

Thats helping people? Trying to trick them into thinking Sprint has
something as good as SMS already. Obviously not or Sprint wouldnt be
trying to get real SMS.

I presume your comment is in response to someone else, as nothing in my
post would trick anyone into thinking Sprint's Short Mail is as good as
SMS.
