Hello, this is my first post in this group.

    My Samsung SCH-3500 (here a photo: http://www.pagealertinc.com/samsung35000.html )
went kaput a few days ago and until the prices come down on the Treo 300/600 I'd like
to replace it with something inexpensive off eBay.

    I see I can get another SCH-3500 for around $5 - $15 + shipping, but I see other models
out there that are newer with more features for around the same price.

What phone would you recommend to someone with a $40 budget to spend on eBay ?

    Thanks in advance!

Make sure any eBay purchase the seller supplies the ESN so you can verify the
phone can be activated on the Sprint network (which will cost you $36), leaving
$4 for a phone and shipping.

You may be better served getting one of the promotional free phones from
    Sprint, like a Nokia 3588i.

If you have had the phone for 18 months on wed you will qualify for new
    customer rebates.

Instead of the free phones I would look into Costco, if you have a
membership, the A460 is $68 for a brand new phone with car charger,
hands free ear-piece, and belt clip.

Unless you qualify for the new cust rebates you will have to pay $36 for
    activation.

    What is on wed?

My wife talked to them yesterday on the phone and they said there's no
activation fee when we get a new phone. There may have been some
misunderstanding and they meant if we get it at a SprintPCS store or
    something.

    Re: Mobile Phone Recommendation

I am not arguing with you, but in just the last - months, I and two
friends have done at least 5 esn swaps, for good reasons. and have not
been charged for the esn change,
(didn't occur to me that they would--I pay my bill, I expect service
when I call c/s, and usually reasonable requests are honored). which
can still be done on-line if not a vision enabled account--is this not
right, and if it is right, why are you saying there is a charge for an
    esn change---over the last 5 years, i have changed phones 10-15 times;
about 3 years ago, when the policy changed for about 2 weeks, they tried
to charge me for esn change, and I indicated, that although I was a
sprint customer for the last 2 years, I certainly didn't have to remain
with them, if they charged me for something that verizon never has/or
had charged me for. Shortly after that, the on-line thing came on which
I used regularly, till switched to vision last fall--it still works for
the other, non vision line, I still have. One of us is misinformed, or
does sprint just make exceptions for me, which I doubt.

I might add I have had service with us cell, cingular, bell south (very
poor c/s, in past) , as well as my current verizon/sprint service--I've
stayed with these two, because they both serve my area well, and have
pissed me off the least. Also, I am somewhat more loyal to verizon(
customer for going on 10 years (originally gte) and would give them some
slack, since over the years, as they have answered their c/s calls
quicker, and were more willing (especially in years past) to try to
resolve a problem rather than argue with me. It seemed (again more so
in the past), they would rather find a way to say yes, to a request,
rather than be inventive in saying no(which sprint(again, more so in the
past)), was not as good at. (Sprint had other great features, however,
    and still does)

Pardon the wordy post, but these points have been bandied about for
    several months.

Comments, and I approbate your prior responses.

    Thanks

    Re: Mobile Phone Recommendation

I know folks tire of reading this from me, but I still believe the best
sprint phone I've ever owned, day in /day out is the sanyo 4700 (which
is avail on ebay for around $20) . STill use one on a non vision line,
great everything, except it is not the most beautiful unit ever. But
the fringe reception for whatever reason is great, battery life is out
of this world, almost as good as the book says; on a new battery will go
over a week. I bought a beat up used one for the speakerphone, which I
also like--posts say the 4900(which is about 80 on ebay) is best, I have
one for vision line, the vision thing eats up the battery.

There are an assortment of phones available on ebay or where ever, I
have a collection of old sprint phones, samsung, sony, and a 5300 camera
phone---if your main purpose for a phone is to talk, and flashy
appearance and gadgets aren't important, the 4700 is the best, hands
    down.

PS. I always wondered who got that one good 3500, mine were cute, but
not durable, --the little 6100 was pretty good, however.

    Comments on your favorire phones???

I still think there will be some new phones released very soon--the
current crop are comig up on a year old--It's like buying a 2003 car and
the 2004's are on the truck in front of the dealership. (New old models
    ain't no cheaoer)

Typical useless wrong answer by a Sprint employee.
In my part of the country, $68 +$36 adds up to more than the $40 budget the OP
    said they wanted to spend.

Maybe you mean "any cheaper:? In any event thats WRONG. Often old models are
blown out at low prices before they are discontinued. The Sanyo 6400 was $50,
the Sanyo 4900 is 2 for $79; and with older models, they've been reviewed many
times and many places so you won't get hit by surprise bugs bew phones may
    have.

This from someone so afraid to stand by his own credibility that he changes=

Factual and useless. Someone posts they want a phone for $40, and a Sprint
apologist tells them to buy a $68 phone at Costco.

    USELESS information.

    Re: Mobile Phone Recommendation

I know what you are saying, and if I could buy the 4900 without a
contract I would buy 2 at the prices you've mentioned, and I did get a
couple of the 6400's (no contract was required)--

    If I can find a bargain buy, on a handset I like/want/need, I will
probably take advantage of the opportunity (the insurance thing is a
    waste,in my opinion--)

If a newly introduced phone comes on the market, the only way to get a
discount is with a contract extension. This is not always a workable
ploy with sprint, but with some other carriers, you are allowed a
discount on a new handset every so often, which I take the best
    advantage of.

my point is that there are probably some new phones just around the
corner, which may or may not be a better product, but before I will use
my yearly chance to get a new phone at a discount, I want to see the
very latest ones, and am reluctant to pay retail for a phone soon to be
replaced, which will be available on ebay at a big discount very
    quickly.

    Re: Mobile Phone Recommendation

It was a suggestion that he should think about spending a little more
and getting a new phone. If you spend $40 for the phone and $20 for a
car charger (which most people want) you are pretty close to the same
    price.
