I called CS today to see if I could get a new phone out of them (I posted
earlier today about sudden problems with reception on Cape Cod), and an
automatic update was performed on my phone. A series of tones followed by a
reboot! Kind of cool. Remains to be seen what good it is going to do, if
any. Has anyone else experienced this - and if so, what was updated? I have
a Sanyo SCP 5150, BTW.

That was a PRL update.

Yes, it's the most common and convenient way to get your PRL
(preferred roaming list) updated. I like to have it done at my Sprint store
every second or third time, because they perform full diagnostics on the
phone to make sure it's working up to snuff.
People here do it constantly. Updating your PRL _may_ improve some
aspects of your phone's performance, as it basically provides your phone
with information on accessing a greater number of cells (the number of
cells is growing all the time, presumably).

But most PRL updates won't improve the phones performance at all. It's
mostly used for roaming purposes.

A PRL update will not stop calls from dropping, it will let you perhaps roam
where you couldn't before.
PRL = Preferred Roaming List

So are you supposed to get it automatically after *2, or do you have
to talk to a rep to flag your phone? I have 2 older Samsung 8500's
and in the 3yrs I've had them a *2 only connects to Clare or rep.

If you feel you need an update and it doesn't happen automatically,
say "agent" to Clare (or scream, she likes that) and tell the agent you'd
like your account flagged for a prl update. Sometimes they'll say "but
according to our records you have the latest PRL". Just ask them to flag it
anyway, and they'll do it. Then the next time you dial *2 it'll happen
automatically.

I usually say some word that Clare doesn't understand, like "burpflat"
or "fiznort."
Apparently, she's not very well educated and, consequently, has a very
limited vocabulary.
I immediately get forwarded to someone in Customer Service.

Re: Called *2 and got an automated update to phone!
On 10/29, I called 888-211-4727 from a landline intending to ask to have
a friend's A460 flagged for a PRL update. I punched in her phone number
and said "PRL update" to Claire. After less than a minute on hold, I
reached a rep who already knew her phone number and that I wanted it to
be flagged for a PRL update! (I asked for it and he said "I've already
done it.") The subsequent OTA update worked fine.
