long term battery storage (li-ion)

hi all,

I got a spare battery with my new spv m2000 (also know as the HTC blue
angel). Anyway, its li-ion and am wondering how long you can store
such a battery safely?

I recall many times finding old AAA batteries that had been laying for
a while and they were leaking fluids - I know its a totally different
tye of battery but can I store a li-ion battery indefinately without
fear of this sort if thing happening?

Is it best to just rotate batteries rather than wait till my current
one expires before using the spare?

The chemicals comprising a LiIon cell are said to have a maximum useful
service life of about 3 years - whether the cell is actually used or not.
After that time, internal degradation markedly reduces the capacity.

Yes.

Depends on your usage pattern. Because LiIon cells have a finite shelf
life, stockpiling unused batteries is often not an effective strategy. If
you are going to do frequent "top off" charges, this will cut into the life
of the cell and rotating between 2 batteries may be a more effective
strategy.

sorry for lack or response - I just wanted to say thankyou for your
thoughts. I will go with rotating the batteries every now and then I
think.

One other thing, why did those old AAA batteries leak anyway? :-)
