I saw the Vodafone reference... I didn't realize Vodafone had aquired AirTouch.

As an old AirTouch/Verizon customer, I must've slept through that merger! <g>

Pacific Bell first created Pac*Tel Mobile as a unit of Pacific Bell.
They then decided to get get out of the wireless business, and (by then
as Pacific Telesis) spun off Pac*Tel Mobile as the independent Airtouch
Cellular, which was bought by Vodaphone, and ultimately became part of
Verizon Wireless. Later, Pacific Telesis decided to get back into the
wireless business, and created the GSM unit Pacific Bell Wireless which
became part of Cingular (which is partly owned by SBC, who had bought
Pacific Telesis), and Cingular ultimately bought AT&T Wireless.

To make it even more complicated, Airtouch owed half of the CellularOne
franchise in the San Francisco Bay area; AT&T owned the other half, and
GTE Mobilenet was the other cellular provider. When Verizon Wireless was
formed, Airtouch had to sell their interest in that franchise (to AT&T)
due to the spectrum cap since GTE Mobilenet was to become part of
Verizon Wireless. AT&T spun off AT&T Wireless, which was purchased by
Cingular, and recently the parent AT&T was purchased by SBC.

    What a pile of spaghetti!

Has this happened or was it just announced that SBC was going to do this? I
think it is still in the "process"!

It was pretty big, but it was definitely overshadowed by the VZ/VZW stuff.

Was just recently approved by AT&T's board. The amount of SBC's stock being
traded in the deal is a low enough percentage that they don't have to
    approve it.

Must still be approved by the Feds, of course.

I seem to remember US West being involved too. Didn't they originally own
    AirTouch?

I think it was the other way around: Airtouch acquired the wireless
assets of USWest. Not sure if it was before or after Vodaphone merged
    with Airtouch.
