I've never had a cellular phone and never felt the need, but maybe now
is a good time to open the door?

I don't yak at all (just rarely to be honest) so the 7-Eleven deal
would be good for someone like me who won't be using it very much. I
do have a few questions that I haven't found the answer to online.
Maybe just being a cell user would qualify someone to answer the first
    Q:

Text messaging is .$.10 per on the Speak Out plan. Would turning off
the phone block all incoming messages or am I at the mercy at the rate
of 10 cents per message for as long as I'm on the plan? (My research
online indicates that virtually all of us are stuck with text
messaging--no way to turn it off if the phone is capable of the
    function.)

Also, How about taxes? Are these phones getting taxed
Federal/State/Locally as well? Or do they fit into some loophole being
    prepaid?

    Thanks.

Presumably, the taxes are "rolled into" the price of the airtime. I
haven't done prepaid in a long time, so I'm assuming this is still the
    case.

This is still happening, although in some cases the prepaid card is
discounted on the self price and then sales tax is added at the till.

Failure is not an option. It's bundled with your software.

.... one other concern to me is roaming onto another compatible network - it
is my understanding that 7-11's plan exclusively uses the Cingular network
and if you out of their service area you are S.O.L. (Net10 & Cingular KIC
    are the same way).
I use my cell for emergency use only(a Tracfone) and the rare
gotta-make-a-phonecall now situations and having a cell that doesn't roam is
    a deal-breaker for me.
