Do the Virgin Mobile Prepaids use the sprint network and would that
include the same network that handles Nextel?

Virgin mobile does resell for sprint, yes.
Nextel phones use a different set of frequencies and different
technologies (ie iden vs cdma) they are now under the same company but,
different networks.

JoshIII adds:
Sprint customers are allowed to roam on other CDMA
networks when Sprint signals are not present.
Virgin Mobile (prepaid) customers are not allowed
to roam, and can only use the Sprint network, which
has rural area coverage issues.
If you plan to stay near interstate highways and cities
all the time, Virgin Mobile will work nicely.
If you live out in the boonies, well, it would
suffice to say you need to do some more
shopping.
Page Plus Cellular (prepaid) uses the Verizon network,
and can be activated using any deactivated Verizon
phone or even "Inpulse" brand phones available
at Walmart starting at $50.
Good luck!
