I was wondering if you have 3g on an iphone 3gs does it use edge to make voice calls or hspa. Also are the bars you have when three g is off the real signal strength for making calls and the bars when hsdpa is on for just internet

Calls are not placed using a data network at all.
EDGE is data and so is HSDPA.
I believe that calls are placed through the voice network which is GPRS.
I could completely be blowing it here though and be completely incorrect, since I almost never use a GSM provider due to lack of coverage domestically.
