Not sure if this has been posted yet (I haven't been reading during my
break) but if you received an unexpected lame Christmas joke by SMS, check
your phone bill... it probably cost you $3.50. I got two, and sure enough my
bill arrived today including $7.00 of charges for it, so I'll be ringing my
    provider tomorrow.

Much info in the Whirlpool thread:

You ring the "content provider" of the SMS listed on your bill, not your
    mobile service provider

I read the Whirlpool web site, quite interesting.

I'm interested in the number quarantine situation . . . if I subscribe and
then get disconnected . . . it is claimed that the SMSes will continue and
the next owner will eb charged. Wonder if that is true. I suspect so

Funny how the TIO don't see it that way, and rightly so.

And even funnier how people with an IQ above 30 never see anything Michael's
    way.

    Bollocks. They are the scammers.
If your phone company doesn't sort it immediately, call the TIO.
It worked for me. Don't waste your time.

yep, this is what the TIO is set up for. With only 4 carriers the should
have pulled this immediately as a scam and then had the carriers do a bulk
    refund.

    this messing around is bull****.

There's a couple of different companies involved, as one provided the SMS
services for another. Sorry I don't have the direct link/details handy just
now, but the Whirlpool thread on this topic makes for interesting reading...
if you look through it, they tracked the culprits down.

I'm coming into this thread late. I'm curious as to how you can receive
an unsolicited message and then be charged for it.

Or am I reading this wrong? If so, what's the go here?

Nup, you got it. Weakness of the premium SMS system, I'd say.

    Re: Christmas joke SMS scam

Premium is an opt-in only service....this company will be closed down and
prosecuted unless they can document and produce where people have opted-in
    for this service.

the weakness is that the TIO aren't taking the carriers to task over the
    fact they are shirking responsibility.

keep pluging guys and lets not throw out the baby with the bathwater as
premium sms is a great technology.

Ah, yes. I got the same message on 22nd Dec, too.

And I just checked my account via the online service and "calls yet to
    be billed"

22 Dec 05:30 pm MWAYTS Add 19900025 to my personal
    address book 19900025 MT 00:00:00 3.18 3.50

    Total for 04xx xxxxxx $3.18 $3.50

Yep, the pricks stung me for $3.50.
