I'm going to be studying in Australia for the next year and was wondering which provider would provide the best deal for a pre-paid sim? I'm probably only going to be making a handful of calls/txts within the country (going to try Skype or something similar for international calls) but may call the U.S. every once in awhile.

I have a friend who is studying in Scotland and she has a plan where incoming calls and texts and free- does anybody offer this in Australia?

Also, could anybody explain how pre-paid works? Do you have to use all the minutes within a month or something?

    Thanks!

i use vodafone. you can buy several pre-pay options. 29$=150$ calls and text with some free voda to voda texting...49$= 320$ calls and texting with some free min voda to voda...79$=5??$(i never bothered getting this one as i never used all my 49$ cap minutes up so went with the 29$ cap)
you really should check out the website for australia as it will give you a more comprehensive list of answers to your question. the other operators try to do the same but lack in options...check out...telstra...virgin...optus....as well. you might find their options better but i prefer vodafone.

    i hope this helped

    Re: International Student- prepaid?

There are a lot of different options in Australia.
But, don't worry, incoming calls and texts are always free (..at least, I think so ..)
I'm on Vodafone and I'm also on a pre-pay option, but different to the one mentioned above.
With some pre-pay, you can just recharge whenever you need to, and don't really have to wait until your current runs out, and if you have any credit left when you recharge, it just adds on.
The one that I use, I pay $30 and get 50 (I think..) free minutes talk to anyone, 100 free text and I can't remmeber how many free minutes Vodafone to Vodafone (after the free minutes to anyone runs out). On my pre-pay, it's 28c per text to anyone; international or national.
There are a whole lot of other options, though, and a few other providers. So just research around.
Vodafone, Three, Optus, Telstra, Virgin. (Depending on which part of Australia you're in, I think..)
Hope that helped a little and good luck! (:
    They all have prepay (:
