It is not often that you see a thin iDEN cellular phone. Billed as the thinnest iDEN phone (it's just a hair of slimmer then the i335), the i425 casts a base profile that should appeal to fans of thin phones. Its features are simple and limited but the thin style mames up for it.
The i425 has however a very simple design. As noted above, it is extremely slim (4.9 inches by 1.9 inches by 0.47 inches), but at 3.9 ounces it weighs a little more than you think. The i425 is available in white (i425e), or titanium (i425t), but the features are the same on both models. The phone fits well in my hand but the plastic material makes it feel quite cheap.
Like many iDEN phones, the i425 1.5-inch screen fails to impress me. Although it supports 65536 colors, the pixel resolution is fairly low (130x130). The graphics are not very clear and the colors were quite bad. You can however change the settings of the display backlight, contrast, and text size.
I was not a big fan of the navigation buttons on the keyboard. All the buttons are made of very cheap plastic, which does not make them very tactile. In addition, the navigation buttons are rather squashed together, and all keys are flat with the surface of the phone, making it difficult to dial a phone number and write SMS. There is a four-lane alternating with an OK button, two softkeys, a dedicated control menu, and the Talk and End / power keys. There is also a web browser shortcut, and you can program Switching to give access to four user-defined functions. The i425 also offers a speakerphone dedicated control below the keyboard buttons. Although i generally agree with such a button, it is not in the best position. The backlight keys is fine, even though the end Talk and buttons are difficult to see in the dark.
Since the phone is designed primarily to make calls, the i425 does not offer a lot of features. There is a 600-contact phone book with room in each entry for eight phone numbers (including a number PTT), an e-mail address and IP address. The i425 offers no photo caller ID, but you can make contacts with one of 20 polyphonic ring tones.
Basic offerings include a vibration mode, text messaging and multimedia, instant messaging, call timers, a notebook, a loudspeaker, a voice recorder and a calendar. Voice command is unexpected, but welcome addition, and the GPS-i425 is enabled.
You can customize the i425 with a variety of themes and the color of the wallpaper. You can download more options with the WAP browser. A number of games and applications that are at your disposal.
The volume level is strong enough and voice sounded natural when i tested the calling quality. There was a slight effect echoed calls from some of my friends and it sounded like they were far away. On their end, callers said i sounded fine, and they did not report any major problems. Speakerphone calls have been also been very good.
The i425 has a battery rated at 2.83 hours and five days of standby. which is quite good for a thin phone like this. Overall i think it is a quite good and simple phone.

Re: Motorola i425 Review
It doesn't seem to look as though it is difficult to dial a number with such cheap plastic buttons. The overall look of it is great, never knew it had such bad quality. I'm glad I read this review, would share it with other friends and family.

Re: Motorola i425 Review
This sounds like a good phone. I wonder, though, if it's like the razr and only supports BREW as opposed to full Java.

Re: Motorola i425 Review
This Motorola looks very cheep. Navigation buttons on the keyboard are just terrible. Personally I think you can find a much better phone in that price range.

Re: Motorola i425 Review
Great review. I was thinking I was getting poor battery life on mine, but I hadn't considered how thin the battery was.
Can you tell me if it's possible to switch a Phone Only mode with this i425? It's a feature i've been able to use on all my prior iDen phones, but I can't seem to find the setting for this feature on the i425.
Cheers

Re: Motorola i425 Review
I find it incredible when I get to see such a thin and sleek mobile. I think Motorola i425 can indeed be termed as the thinnest iDEN phone. Thanks for uploading the image.

Re: Motorola i425 Review
When I first turned it on, I saw the same display screen, dim, bad colors, poor backlight. The keypad even had a dark blue light, you could barely see the numbers! Also, little by little this phone starts to BREAK. Out of nowhere, a big black stain appeared on the phone, made the screen darker than it is! also, the high gloss on this phone makes all the scratches more visible. To be honest. This phone is just like every Motorola iDen phone. Don't expect new things. Poor design, poor everything. There is no efford in this phone. It's like if they just thought of it and created it under pressure or in a couple of days.

Re: Motorola i425 Review
Hi,
This handset looks good to me.
One issue which is very common that what about the battery backup for this Motorola piece.
It is the general tendency in the people to only buy only the Nokia phone.
So can you please tell me whats new in that piece so that i can change my mobile.
Thanks.Last edited by vijendrasnv; 07-24-2009 at 04:21 PM.
