what makes the arcade jackpots go up and down?

this has been on my mind for a while now... i checked the FAQ and couldnt find an answer there... i searched the threads and still nothing. thanks in advance for the info and happy new year

People winning and losing. When you play you put in money and that gets added to the 'pot'. If you were to get the highest score you would win all of that. I think if you get 2nd you get half and 3rd a third. Something like that.
