The limit you can use on a debit card is the balance of the checking account, unless you have overdraw protection. At least that's how it works for me anyway. This may vary depending on the bank you use. Best thing to do is call up a bank and ask them the questions about opening a checking account and what limits they have on their debit cards. And is there a spending limit, based on which type of checking account you open. As some accounts force you to maintain a certain level of funds in the account at all times.

I have had a few times I had to whip out my credit card to buy something (over $800), because the item with tax was over the limit in my checking account. So what I did was paid for the item with the credit card. Then I'd just pay the credit card off once I had the funds in the checking account, with either a transfer from savings or a deposit.

We Canadians are bad, most of us don't carry a single dollar in cash anymore, it's either debit or credit card.

In fact, and I know this is sad, I paid for a newspaper today with my debit card, grand total, $1.17

FYI, we Americans do the same. It's a rare day if my wallet has "money" in it. Personally, I can't wait for the day where every place accepts debit cards.

That's 'cause you took $50ish outta his kid's mouths .... they get generally get a kickback from the finance company for the financing the deal through them ...

I think that's where us Canadians are on top. EVERY store in Canada accepts debit cards, or at least I haven't found one that doesn't (even in the middle of no where on the highway).

I was acctuall interested with this, I just got a call earlier to pick up some paperwork for a repo at the PSECU building here in HBG, and asked them about this... they give a debit card with any savings account

It was probably more than that it was a wrecker $69000.00 but i dont like paying finance charges.

For me I use BMO (The Bank of Montreal). I got my account when I was 10. The card for the instabank (ATM thing) could be used as your debit card. It would withdraw money straight from my account. When I turned 18 there was a fee (dont remember but it was very small) for every transaction. I changed to a BMO Mastercard for a few reasons.

1. Free
2. Insurance
3. Useable all around the world
4. Huge limit (not the 100$/day like my debit card)
5. 1 or 2 % cashback per year
7. Earing intrest on the money in the bank before I pay my credit card bill.

$100 a day limit on your debit card ? WTF ?

I'm with TD Canada Trust, I have an unlimited Infinity Chequing account ($12 a month, as many debit / interac transactions I want), with limits of $5000 a day for Interac purchase, $2000 out of the bank machine, and weekly limits of $15 000 Interac, $6000 bank machine withdrawal.

My account is fully insured against fraud, and I have access to Telebanking and Internet banking.

I have a TD Visa too, which is nice because I can transfer funds from my Infinity Chequing account to my Visa online (to pay my balance or monthly payment). Fast, convenient, and I don't ever have to leave my house
