well, windows xp is actually very secure if set up properly. And, it will perform extremely well if you have the hardware to support it!

If you think the restrictions(registration) are getting bad now, just wait a couple more years.

XP is by far my favorite OS, it has barely crashed and it works well with most of my applications.

XP should work well for you as long as as you put a little muscle (1.2Mhz+) and a lot of ram (256MB+) behind it.

It works even better if you can install it on a freshly formatted drive, rather than upgrade. (Unfortunately, you'll need to find all those progs you "borrowed")

Another thing that will make XP (or any OS) healthier>> get rid of adware and spyware:
First, switch to a p2p app (like WinMX) that won't infect your OS with adware and spyware.
Second, run a utility like AD-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) to get rid of any cpu-wasting garbage that is hanging out on your system. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then your system is probably full of these little gems.

One of the many COOL things I like about XP is the Windows Messenger (/NetMeeting) implementation. If we both have that version, then we can remotely view each others' session. This is an incredible trouble-shooting tool.

The Plug & Play is simply kick-ass, as well.

I'm not a Microsoft nut by any means, but if we can just hang out and survive a couple of service packs, XP will probably start to shine. On the other hand, I predict that 5 or 6 years from now, this board will have folks who will be cursing the latest OS offering from Microsoft and swearing that nothing is as stable as "good ol' XP".

well I'm running a dual boot right now and the OS i'm using for games which is xp and 2k is for my work. 2k rarely has a serious crash, programs crash sometimes but never bring down the OS like 9x has. XP is just for gaming, I think it's a little faster for games maybe because it's optimized for home use while 2k is for business use. XP's stability is much better than 9x but it's not as near bullet proof as 2k is.

    AArrgghh... Face the facts
    XP is purty
XP tailors itself to how you use it (autorun and defrag set up your PC to do what you do the most)
If you set up the customize options on your folders XP will give you all kinds of really great options to work with and view your pics and music.
Did someone say 98 was more stable???
XP is Win2000 with lots of bells and whistles
More likely than not if you have a crash in XP it is some software your trying to run rather than the OS. Mac solves this by not supporting the gazillion different software titles that XP does.
Sure Linux is stable, but lets see what happens when you start swapping USB cables between a Fugi FinePix 3800, HandSpring Visor, Sanyo 4900, and Intel USB 2.0 webcam without skipping a beat.
If you run the hardware to back it up XP is the best there is, after all, it runs the world.

Sledge apologizes with great sincerity for this rant... while burning a CD at 52X, downloading from 10 sources on Kazaa, editiny a 120Meg pic in Photoshop 7 for the webpage he is desining in Dreamweaver and system resources at 82%.

    Peace to ya
If all goes well I'll live another 50 years.
I'll never get done by then!!!

If you'd take time to properly set up XP with the latest drivers it's rock solid, can count the blue screens on one hand since I installed it for over a year ago, and they were all my own fault (using beta drivers). Using "BootVis" (a tool on microsoft site, search on that term) you can squeeze the boot up time to 15 secs, as fast as resuming from hibernate mode.
