Back in 2011, Mozilla has started a project in an attempt to create a standalone platform based on the same principles of the open web. This particular project has taken the name of "Firefox OS", and has now become one of the few alternative mobile operating systems to become commercially available.

Based on early reviews, Firefox OS isn't really some that will shake the mobile world, and it actually looks more like a platform that goes well hand-in-hand with entry level devices. That's actually the case with the LG Fireweb, a handset that has just been announced in Brazil.

Spec-wise, the Fireweb delivers a 4 inch display with a resolution of 480 x 320, a Qualcomm processor running at 1 GHz, and 4 GB of internal storage. On the back of the device resides a 5 MP main camera with flash and auto-focus.

Overall, the Fireweb is indeed an entry-level device. Initially, the handset will go on sale in Brazil, through Telefonica Vivo, and it will set you back roughly $207 on pay-as-you-go. Alternatively, the device will cost $59 on a regular agreement. In addition, Telefonica Vivo has announced that it will release Firefox OS devices (most likely the LG Fireweb as well) in nearby markets, such as Peru, Mexico and Uruguay.

All in all, the Firefox OS market is starting to expand, but these are humble beginnings. Nothing wrong with that, of course, and if the platform will be a successful one, then I'm fairly sure that Mozilla will continue to push its mobile platform to higher-end standards. Until then, there might be a long way to go. Share your thoughts below and let us know whether or not you'd be interested in the LG Fireweb.
