While both the Motorola Droid Maxx and the Moto X have been recently launched on the market, the Developer Edition of these devices has been rather delayed. Motorola's Vice President of Product Management – Punit Soni - has previously said that the Developer Edition of the Moto X will be made available "in days". This announcement was made about a month ago, so clearly something intervened with Motorola's plans.

Fortunately though, the Dev Edition of both the DROID MAXX and the Moto X has been released today. On the not-so-bright side, it appears that the Moto X for Verizon as well as the DROID MAXX is already out of stock. Meanwhile, the GSM version of the Moto X Dev Edition (which is supposed to work with T-Mobile and AT&T's network) will supposedly be launched this Friday.

As far as pricing goes, either one of these handsets will set you back $649, evidently off-contract. What will you get for that sum is a device that arrives with an unlockable bootloader. Additionally, each Dev Edition handset packs 32 GB of internal storage.

Aside from these small differences, both the DROID MAXX and the Moto X Dev Edition boast the same hardware specs as their regular counterparts. This includes the same dual-core Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.7 GHz, an Adreno 320 GPU, 2 GB of RAM and a 4.7 inch display for the Moto X / 5.0 inch display for the DROID, both boasting a resolution of 720 x 1280. The handsets also pack a 10 MP main camera complemented by a 2 MP front-facing sensor, and while the Moto X is being powered by a 2,200 mAh battery, the DROID MAXX features a beefier 3,500 mAh unit.

Assuming that you're interested in buying either one of these handsets then I suggest you keep an eye on the Motorola's websites (source below). Once the handsets are back in stock, I suggest you act fast, or they may go out of stock again.
