I assume that every gadget enthusiast out there is aware of the fact that each year, the majority of flagship smartphones have a tendency of delivering screens with larger diagonals and higher resolutions. This year's norm was (and still is) 1080 x 1920, but the situation is bound to change next year. As proof of that (if common sense is not enough) we now have official reports coming from smartphone display manufacturers, indicating that they are working on the next-gen screens.

As a matter of fact, "Japan Display" has recently unveiled two new smartphone screens that boast a resolution of 1440 x 2560. The smaller panel measures 5.4 inches in diagonal, and due to its high resolution, the pixel density is as high as 543 pixels per inch, making it the "densest" smartphone screen ever revealed.

The second screen unveiled by Japan Display measures 6.2 inches and once again, delivers a resolution of 1440 x 2560. However, due to its larger footprint, this panel features "only" 473 pixels per inch. That's still a higher pixel density than what you'd get from a 5 inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920.

In any case, both panels are said to be quite power efficient due to their use of low temperature polycrystalline silicon, and they both seem to offer decent contrast.

Now, the other interesting part is that, while "Japan Display" might not ring a bell for you, in reality, this business is the result of a collaboration between Sony, Hitachi, Toshiba and the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan. Keeping these brands in mind, there's a high probability that these new 1440 x 2560 smartphone displays will make their debut on various Sony smartphones. Perhaps next year's Xperia flagships will boast these displays, so we should get to experience them on our own by the end of 2014.

Are you a Sony fan? What are your thoughts on a Sony handset boasting a WQHD display?
