The 4G steam roller continues on with the US Cellular team actually beating some larger carriers to the punch. While Sprint customers are going to have to wait for smartphones like the EVO 4G, US Cellular already has the Samsung Galaxy S "Aviator" for sale. Today is the first day for the Aviator and it is sporting modest features. It is not a monster like the Evo 4G or the Samsung Note, but still comes with a larger screen than the Apple iPhone.

Good for US Cellular for bringing the fight to the "big dogs". The Samsung Galaxy S Aviator is a smartphone that is a clone of the earlier released "Droid Charge". This is going to be an Android smartphone but with an older version, not the Ice Cream Sandwich version. The exterior looks like most of today's smartphones. It is a black plastic slab with the front dominated by a touch screen display. There is no manual keyboard for the Aviator which helps it to feel more solid in the hands.

Taking a look at the most important part of this smartphone, the user interface, it is a Super AMOLED "plus" display. It is sporting deep colors and blacks so black it is hard to determine where the screen ends and the chassis begins. The display is 4.3 inches of digital real estate that is built to last year's standards. That is, it is not as clear as an iPhone retina screen but still has the clarity of the Galaxy line of smartphones that are so popular. The AMOLED construction means the screen can be seen clearly even outdoors during sunlight. The screen comes with all the regular acrobatics, such as an accelerometer and proximity sensor.

Android Gingerbread, version 2.3, is the name of the mobile operating system that runs the menus and programs. This smartphone may or may not be on the list to get the upgrad to the "Ice Cream Sandwich" version. Stay tuned for more information on that. Otherwise, version 2.3 can support NFC contactless transactions. The bad news is that the Samsung Aviator does not have the proper RFID chip to make that happen. If a mobile payments system is needed, there are plenty coming online such as "Square" or "Digimo". The smart Android user will be careful what they download since the Android platform is the number one mobile system that malicious programmers like to exploit.

The processor humming along in the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator is not a dual core model. It is not even up there in speed with most "normal" new smartphones. It is a one gigahertz chip. That may sound slow by today's standards, but will likely not disappoint. It runs speedy enough to please most users. The rear camera is a powerful eight megapixels, but will not support 1080p video recording. It does support auto focus during video shoots. The front camera is the typical 1.3 megapixel setup for video chatting.

Battery life for the Samsung Aviator is amiable, but the internal memory is skimpy, 1.4 gigabytes. Yes, it has a card slot and Samsung is throwing in a 16 gigabyte flash memory card to sweeten the deal. Look for this handset in selected "LTE" cities for $100 dollars. Other locations will have to pay $200 for the chance to own an Aviator.
