unlocked cell phone is allowed you to put diff sim card in one phone. most of the phone is lock to a service provider. if your phone is t-mobile and put at&t sim card in it the phone will not gonna take that sim card. unlocked phone don't choose any service provider. you can put t-mobile, cingular, at&t or if you are in canada put fido, roger, microcell. you can put any sim card there is in the world especially if you have a unlock tri-band phone that's work all over the world.

some cellphone brand can unlock by unlocking code by just typing the code to your cell. (nokia, panasonic,lg,siemens, samsung) and some needs a data cable that hook up to your comp and unlocking software. i have nokia unlocking but if have a diff brand check this site: www.cellularpager.com
unlocking code is base to your imei number, provider, and phone model.
