So, right now I live in the US and I've got a Moto Droid, and I'm on my parents' cell plan with Verizon. At the end of August I will be going to Ontario for a year for grad school. I would love to take my Droid with me to Canada, but that would most likely be prohibitively expensive.
My mom did a little research and found that I might be able to use my Droid with Telus as a prepaid phone with a SIM card. However, I don't think the Droid is compatible (does anyone know what I'm talking about?) But, if I did have a compatible phone, is that service available? Would it still be really expensive to use data?
So, if it turns out to be too expensive to take my Droid, does anyone know if it's possible to put my account with Verizon on hold until I get back? And once I get to Canada, what are my options? I was thinking about just getting a simple prepaid phone. Or are there plans I can sign up for for only a year? And what's the cheapest way to call my family back in the US? I've been hearing about Skype, but I don't really know how that works.
Thanks for any help!

You may want to try Rogers and Bell as well, I think you can use the phone on all three networks, just check out their sites.

So I was trying to find the IMEI number for my phone, but then I read in another thread that Verizon phones don't have IMEI numbers. Is there another way to check compatibility, or does this mean my phone isn't compatible?
