If I were to buy an unlocked smartphone, would I be able to turn it on and utilize all of its non-calling functions via wi-fi?

Are there limitations on which phones can or cannot do this?

I need a smart device for use in a hospital, preferably an android OS, but am happy with my current phone service and have no interest in switching it, nor do I mind carrying 2 devices around with me.

Thank you very much in advance.

I think what you want is a Pocket PC, Palm, or other device.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't need the phone functionality, right?

Yes it's possible. Think of it as any regular phone you have had and the only difference is that it can accept any simcard which is great, so why would there be any limitations?

Thank you for the responses.

I am looking for a device running a mobile platform, preferable Droid OS since I need the mobile apps for my work. I havent found a mobile non-phone device that met that qualification.

I also am curious as to whether or not the app store and any OS upgrades would be accessible if the phone was not linked to any sort of active service.

Thanks in advance!

At the moment, the Droid OS is only available on mobile phones.

There are other mobile devices that are NOT phones. Again, take a look at the (provided) links for the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Axim-X51v-Processor-BlueTooth-Infrared/dp/B000COJ8NY"]Dell Axim, the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/iPAQ-211-Enterprise-Handheld-210/dp/B000WR0CKE"]HP iPAQ, or the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Palm-1048NA-Z22-Handheld/dp/B000BI2180"]Palm.

Here is a link of 7 (non-phone) android devices.

If this is not what you are after, could you please clarify?

I need to use a variety of medical app for which I know of no equivalents outside of the android or apple mobile OS, so getting a device not running either would negate the point of me getting it. Palm used to be very popular in my field, but it is no longer being supported by many of the apps I need to use and I kind of want some sort of future-proofness in my purchase.

Ive opted against apple because I really dislike their company on a whole and I have found that I need a physical keyboard, which none of their mobile devices offer.

So basically it MUST:
Support wi-fi connectiviry
Be able to access/launch mobile apps designed for android smartphones
Physical keyboard
Be small enough to carry on my person

Applications are *very* easy for software developers to write, and they are tailored to do *exactly* what you need.

I am a software developer that writes applications for my company. They want a new feature, I simply add it.

If you are at a large hospital, you probably have software developers (or programmers) there already.

Links for you, though:

Attention Kmart shoppers: $149 Android tablet on aisle 5 - Google 24/7 - Fortune Tech

ARCHOS

android tablet - Google Search

I'm not sure why my last post that included the links never showed up, though. Interesting!

Thank you for the links, but I dont think that is what I am looking for. 7 inches seems a tad to big to fit into my pocket and none of them have physical keyboards.

Also, can anyone confirm whether you can still access android app store and/or OS upgrades without phone service via an unlocked mobile device?
