OK, bear with me here. The setup: I have 900.00 bucks in brand new Samsung 5g capable phones. They both are on the same carrier, which is the Verizon network. If I do a speed test on either phone, I get 6 to 30 Mbps down.

I noticed something odd. Using straight mobile data, if I go to a web page like say, imdb.com, it loads pretty slow. Using Audible, it can take quite a while to download a book. A lot of the times, the book download will crap out on me and I have to start over.

However, I noticed that if I usb tether the phone to my PC, everything loads snappy as all get out on my PC. It's quite nice.

At first I figured this was because my PC is a hell of a lot more powerful than a cell phone. Makes sense.

But then I hot spotted one phone and connected to it via wifi from the other phone. Turn off wifi and imdb.com loads very slow with mobile data. Turn wifi back on and connect to the other phone, all the of the sudden imdb.com and Audible books download nice and fast, like my PC when I have a phone tethered to it.

OK, what the hell is going on here? Both phones are on the same network. Both phones get the same speeds on speed tests. I know the phones are capable of browsing the web nice and snappy, because I can see how much faster it is when one phone is connected to the other phone via a hot spot. It's the same freaking Internet, so why does it seem that browsing with straight mobile data is so much slower than when I'm getting the Internet from another hot spot, or when I USB tether my phone to my PC?

I've managed to work in tech in some form or fashion most of my life, but I have to admit I'm at a complete loss here. If anything, I would think that browsing using straight mobile data should be faster, because the tethering and hot spotting should be another layer that slows things down a little.
