Has anyone heard anything good or bad about Pure Talk USA? I came across it online, it seems like the best deal for a pay as you go cell phone that I've seen. The thing that is the most appealing is that they sell SIM cards separately, so I can keep my old, unlocked phone and start calling. I'm coming back to the US from living abroad for a year, and I don't want to go back to the US cell phone world of contracts and having to buy a phone along with a plan. I just want a SIM card. Their coverage seems perfect for what I need, but basically it seems too good to be true. I haven't been able to find any reviews of its service online, which may not be a good sign. Any advice?

    Re: Pure Talk USA

I've had mine for only a couple months. We opted out of our Centennial contract since we really dont use the phones much. We're not sure if we like them so much or not. My husband does not but I think he has trouble with his phone beciuse of the building he works in. Even with my Centennial, I coudl not call him at work. If I send a text, he doesn't get it until he walks outside the building. Frustrating. I can't call him at work at all but I coudln't with Centennial either. I love that it's only $10. a month per phone and it's automatically on my credit card and no contract. For me, so far, it's worth it. My time has rolld over each month so far because I do not talk that much. My text charges come out of the time and I still have loads left.

Ask me in 4 more months and I'll tell you if I still like it.

    Re: Pure Talk USA

I signed up for Pure Talk back in March. I couldn't find much information b/c it was a new plan. After some research I found that their company had been in the wireless business for years. They also sell a prepaid phone and LD services. It has been awesome so far. Great service and good quality. It really helped out my budget only being $10 a month...and NO contract. I even talked my parents into getting out of their AT&T contract to switch over to Pure Talk. They are older and don't use their phones that much...they were paying way to much before. You can't beat $10 a month and keep minutes you don't use!

    Re: Pure Talk USA

I've been a customer since March and have had no problems whatsoever with them. I would highly recommend this service to anyone looking for cheap alternative to the ATTs, Sprints, and Verizons out there. No issues with minutes rolling over. I switched myself and my wife over to this plan from Verizon with no problems and haven't looked back since. We pretty much cut our monthly cell phone bill in half.

PureTalk's SIM card is not compatible with Blackberry phones. Otherwise, their service and their phone are working fine for me.

    Re: Pure Talk USA

I started out with Verizon then went to AT&T which both created problems for me because such high monthly bills (even though I got the most basic plan!) The "extra fees" are ridiculous. I was happy to get out of my long term contract and go with Puretalk. I have a basic phone but it does the job and the bill is pocket change (with no extra fees!) hope that helps

    Re: Pure Talk USA

Signed my parents up for Pure Talk. They dont ever talk on the phone so they went with Straight Talk at first but didnt want to keep paying $30 each for 1000 minutes each since they only use around 150 or 200 minutes combined per month. Now they pay $20 / month for both and get 200 minutes. Since the minutes rollover they will never have to pay more than the $20. Perfect for them.

    Re: Pure Talk USA

I have switched three lines over to Pure Talk, an unlocked Nokia 5800 Smartphone, an unlocked iPhone and an old Prepaid AT&T Nokia Candy Bar.

Two switches involved porting a number from another reseller of AT&T (AirVoice Wireless) and both ports were very painful. Customer service was helpful, but I had many issues, and it took almost 5 days for each line to finally get switched and activated correctly. When porting a number, you have to request that VoiceMail and Text messaging be activated on their network, something that you don't have to do when requesting a new phone number from them.

However, once the service was up and running, it is great, and the costs are downright awesome, depending on you calling habits. For 5 cent texts and no access fees for using the network on a given day, you can't beat this plan. You are required to pay at least $10 a month, but I would say that if you expect to use between 100 and 300 minutes per month, this might be the best plan out there. Texting is .5 a minute, so if you text a decent amount this is a great option too.. No Data

Yes, there are a couple options that are better for those who would never need a phone, including my old carrier, AirVoice Wireless or Virgin Mobile, but for those who like to keep their Phone choice (GSM phones only) separate from their service provider, PureTalk USA is a winner in my book.

There is nothing wrong with AirVoice, except the pricing. And I had switched from AT&T prepaid to AirVoice Wireless about 18 months ago. The only downside I can determine from PureTalk is that you will always be paying at least $10 a month for $120 annually. If you use fewer minutes than 101, AirVoice Wireless might be a better plan, as there $30 refill of airtime last for 5 months, which in essence is $6 per month. But there is a $0.20 network access fee for your first text message or minute of a phone call, and then every minute or text there after is $0.10. I am expecting to save some decent money with PureTalkUSA, given that my wife and I are each currently using about $30 of AirVoice Wireless airtime each, per month, between voice minutes and text messages.

I don't understand why more people haven't figured out prepaid GSM service with unlocked phones. Both my wife and I have unlocked smartphones, I use a Nokia 5800 and she has an iPhone 2g. We use the Wi-Fi network in our house for data. We don't travel very much, and so having a mobile data plan isn't a huge issue, but if there were a prepaid company that could offer mobile data as part of the package, I would consider it... that seems to be the last frontier, prepaid GSM data with no contract.

Buying a CDMA phone is like buying an anchor, it is worthless to you when you want/need to switch companies. I will have been with three different service providers, all on the same phone, which helps to eliminate the e-waste aspect of having to buy a new phone every-time you switch to a different company. Finally, I am looking forward to getting a Nexus One when they drop in price, which, they will in the future.

    Re: Pure Talk USA

I didn't even think about the fact that you could use the iphone. I have my old 2g that I might give my son. He wants an iphone so bad but I told him there was no way a 10 year old was getting one. this is perfect because i can just open another account for him with Pure Talk USA and put a max of $10 on his account. I really just want him to have a phone for emergencies so I can get a hold of him.

    Thanks bwparker1.

    Re: Pure Talk USA

djenkins, I tried to send you a PM< but I guess I cannot until I have 5 posts here. Make sure that you unlock the iPhone 2G, in order to use it with PureTalk or any other carrier that is NOT AT&T. A few Googles and some free software tools and you should be on you way to unlocking the phone for use with any GSM reseller. Takes about 30 minutes to complete the unlock process.

    Good luck!

    Re: Pure Talk USA

    Sorry. I can't PM either.

Quick question. Do I even need to unlock my phone? I mean when I cut off my AT&T service did they lock it back somehow? Sorry I just don't know much about this process. Pure Talk runs on the AT&T network doesn't it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I realize it's been awhile since I posted here! I have been using Pure TalkUSA on my iPhone and love paying less than $50 for my unlimited plan- it allows me to save a bunch on my monthly iPhone bill, I highly recommend it to everyone with an iPhone-- just make sure you get good wifi.

Hi everyone, the iphone does work on the puretalk network, but there seem to be some issues like the voicemail icon doesn't direct me to retrieve my voicemail. Does anyone have this problem or know how to set it up properly so I can retreive voicemail when tapping the icon in the phone menu?

    Re: Pure Talk USA

Pure TalkUSA SIM card arrived today. Popped in my first generation iPhone and it worked immediately. Took it around town today and it worked flawlessly everywhere. This iPhone 2G now has new life and I have the same coverage as every AT&T phone in my house. And we didn't have to sign up for a data plan. WiFi is everywhere. For those of you who are looking for iPhone use without a data plan, this will work easily.

By the way an earlier post in this thread contained some erroneous information. This SIM card from Pure TalkUSA works in my GSM Blackberry, too. I am going to save a small fortune if this service stays as good as it was today.

Note to Ashland: I get "new voicemail" notification on screen with caller ID information, and I also get the little red circular indicators. No visual voicemail, however when i tap the voicemail tab it dials automagically into my Pure TalkUSA voicemail box. Works without fail; tested several times.

My iPhone 2G is jailbroken and unlocked.
