The Android 4.4 KitKat update has been officially released over-the-air on the HTC One Google Play Edition. However, every OTA update is being released in stages, meaning that some devices will receive the update before others.

As such, if you wish to enjoy the latest update without having to wait for the OTA notification to arrive, then you can sideload the official update by following the guide below.

WARNING! Do not use this guide or this Android 4.4 KitKat package for any other HTC One variants! This is an update designed for the HTC One Google Play Edition.

NOTE: This package is designed to update the HTC One Google Play Edition from Android 4.3 JWR66Y, to Android 4.4 KRT16S. Don't apply this update if you have an older, or different Android version than 4.3 JWR66Y.

Manually Applying (Sideloading) the Official Android 4.4 KitKat Update:

  1. First, you will need to download the official Android 4.4 package on your computer. Click this link (download link via Android Central)
  2. Now, connect your smartphone to your computer using the USB cable
  3. Copy the downloaded package, and paste it on your phone's storage

Now, you need to boot your smartphone in recovery mode. To do so:

  1. Press and hold the "Volume Down" button, then press and hold the "Power" button
  2. You will get a countdown on screen, after which the screen will go dark. At this point, release the "Power" button but keep pressing the "Volume down" key
  3. After a while, you will be presented with the fastboot menu. Use the "Volume" buttons to navigate to and highlight "Recovery mode"
  4. Press the "Power" button to confirm the "Recovery mode" selection
  5. You should now see the HTC logo, followed by a screen with an exclamation mark and a triangle
  6. Press and hold both the "Volume Up" and the "Volume down" buttons.
  7. Tap the "Power" button
  8. Release the "Volume" keys
  9. A new menu should have appeared. This is "Recovery Mode"
  10. Use the "Volume" buttons to navigate to "update from phone storage" (or "Apply update from internal storage"). Press the "Power" button to confirm
  11. Browse for the update package that you have downloaded, and load it so that the update can be applied
