HTC Backup is one of the several means that can be used in order to backup and restore data from and on the HTC Desire 500. This feature uses Dropbox as its backup storage location, so you'll need a Dropbox account before proceeding.

Back Up your Device Daily:

You can enable HTC Backup to perform a daily backup over Wi-Fi. To do so:

  1. Open the Notification panel
  2. Tap the "Settings" icon
  3. Tap "Backup & reset" and press the "On/Off" switch associated with "Backup"
  4. Select "HTC Account" as your backup account, and sign into the account.
  5. Sign in to Dropbox
  6. Once you've set up your device to perform daily backups, you'll see the date and time of the last backup under "Backup history"

Restoring the Backup to Your Phone:

  1. After a factory reset turn on your phone
  2. Choose to restore content and then select "Restore from HTC Backup" on the set-up screen
  3. Sign in to your HTC Account
  4. Sign in to the same Dropbox account that contains the backup
  5. Allow HTC Backup to access Dropbox
  6. Select a backup and then tap "Next"
  7. Wait for the settings to be restored, and then tap "OK"

Backing Up Text Messages:

  1. Open the "Messages" app
  2. Tap the "menu" icon depicted as three vertical dots
  3. Tap "Back up/Restore SMS" > "Back up" > "Back up SMS"
  4. Type in a name for the backup file and press "OK"

Restoring Text Messages:

  1. In the "Messages" app, tap the "menu" button
  2. Press "Back up/Restore SMS"
  3. Tap "Restore"
  4. Select the method of restoring and then tap "Next"
  5. Select the backup file that you wish to import
  6. Press "OK"

Backing up Text Messages via Email:

  1. Open the "Messages" screen and tap "menu"
  2. Select "Back up/Restore SMS"
  3. Tap "Back up" > "Back up SMS via email". (The backup file is attached to an email)
  4. Type in your email address, compose the message and send it

Note: In order to restore your text messages, open the email message containing the backup file attachment, download the attachment and open it to import the messages.

Backing Up Your Contacts:

  1. Access the "Contacts" application
  2. Go to the "People" tab and press the "menu" button
  3. Select "Manage contacts" > "Import / Export contacts"
  4. Tap "Export to SD card"
  5. Select a type of account and then press "OK"

Restoring Contacts:

  1. Open the contacts app and go to the "People" tab
  2. Press "Menu" > "Manage contacts" > "Import / Export contacts"
  3. Tap "Import from SD card"
  4. Assuming that you have multiple accounts set up, select the type for the imported contacts

Backing Up Your Personal Dictionary:

  1. From the notifications panel or the apps drawer, go to "Settings"
  2. Tap "Language & keyboard" and then tap "HTC Sense Input"
  3. Press "Personal dictionary" and tap "Menu" > "Back up to storage" or "Back up to email"
  4. Press "OK" when prompted to do so

Importing Your Personal Dictionary:

  1. Access the "Settings" menu
  2. Tap "Language & keyboard"
  3. Tap "HTC Sense Input" > "Personal dictionary"
  4. Press the "Menu" button and select "Restore from storage"
  5. Once prompted, tap "OK"
