WARNING! When you master reset your phone, all your personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory will be removed. This includes downloaded content, media files and ringtones, contacts, apps etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Data stored on the SIM and SD cards will not be affected by the factory reset. To back up data from the internal memory before the factory reset, you can visit this thread for instructions, and this thread for a guide on restoring data. In addition, this guide explains how to back up and restore data via HTC Backup or locally.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup & reset”
  4. Turn “Back up my data” and “Automatic restore” On or Off
  5. Tap “Reset phone”
  6. In case your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter the necessary PIN / password to proceed
  7. Optionally, choose whether to “Erase SD card” too. WARNING – by enabling this option, all data on the SD card will be deleted
  8. At the “Warning” pop-up, tap “OK”
  9. Tap “OK” again to confirm and reset your device

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise doesn’t allow you to reset it via Settings, alternatively you can try applying a factory reset from the Android System Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. Make sure the phone is turned off
  2. Press and hold “Volume down” and “Power”
  3. Once the phone vibrates, release “Power”
  4. When you gain access to “hTC download mode”, release “Volume down” too
  5. From the menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Reboot to bootloader”
  6. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  7. Press “Volume down” to highlight “boot to recovery mode”
  8. Press “Power”
  9. When an exclamation mark appears, press and hold “Power”, then press and release “Volume Up”
  10. Once you gain access to “Android System Recovery”, release all hardware buttons
  11. From the Recovery menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “wipe data / factory reset”
  12. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  13. Once the phone resets, “Reboot system now” will be highlighted. Press “Power” to confirm and restart your device

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After you factory reset your device, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings” and scroll to “Phone”
  3. Tap “About” > “Software information”
  4. Check if a new update is available, and if necessary, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply it
