Today, I am going to be comparing two huge smart phones, the LG G2 and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. Both smart phones have some pretty decent technology and are flag ship smart phones for their respective brands. This is a comparison between two of the first next generation smart phones and I am really looking forward to it. In fact, both these smart phones may even be considered as phablets (I'm not going to). Which smart phone is going to set the bench mark for the next generation? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

Keep in mind that the Xperia Z Ultra comes with a much larger display than the LG G2. That being said, the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm while the Xperia Z Ultra measures 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5 mm. I’m going to ignore the length and width. But as far as the thickness is concerned, the Xperia Z Ultra, even with its larger display is a more than 3 mm thinner. It seems Sony has mastered the art of building a slim smart phone. But the LG G2 is much lighter than the Xperia Z Ultra at 143 g as opposed to 212 g.

So, the LG G2 is lighter and the Xperia Z Ultra is thinner. Both smart phones have a plus and a minus and that’s why this point’s a draw.

Display

Like I said above, the Xperia Z Ultra has a much larger touch screen at 6.4” and uses TFT technology which is a little old but still gets the job done. As far as the LG G2 is concerned it has a 5.2” touch screen but uses superior IPS LCD technology. As far as pixel density is concerned, the LG G2 is much better again with 423 ppi as compared to the 342 ppi you get with the Xperia Z Ultra. Don’t get me wrong, 342 ppi is quite excellent considering the screen is so large but when you come to think of it, 5.2” is a pretty large screen too and it offers 423 ppi.

If I was asked to choose between both displays, I would go with the LG G2 because it provides more detail and uses better technology and that is why it gets this point.

Memory & Storage

Both these smart phones come with 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Each of them also has a maximum clocking speed of 800 MHz. But in terms of storage the LG G2 takes a major hit since it does not support storage expansion. I, quite frankly, am quite happy with 32 GB of internal memory. But there are others that can’t even think of a smart phone without storage expansion. The LG G2 comes with 16 or 32 GB of internal memory while the Xperia Z Ultra comes with 16 GB of internal memory and allows storage expansion up to 64 GB.

Since the LG G2 lacks storage expansion, I will have to give this point to the Xperia Z Ultra.

Camera

As far as photography is concerned, the LG G2 is far superior to the Xperia Z Ultra. It comes with a 13 MP camera on the back and an LED flash. The Xperia Z Ultra comes with an 8 MP camera which is pretty decent but lacks a flash which is extremely disappointing and more than enough to sway this point in favor of the LG G2. To add to this, the LG G2 lets you record high definition videos at 60 frames per second and includes optical image stabilization.

Both smart phones have a wide range of features although this point is still going to the LG G2 as it clearly does enough to prove its worthy of this point.

OS & Performance

Both these smart phones runs on Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) and since it’s the same OS, there is no difference between them. And when it comes to performance, there is a slight difference between both smart phones, but definitely not enough to win this point. While the LG G2 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip and Quad core, 2260 MHz, Krait 400 processor, the Xperia Z Ultra comes with the same chip but features a Quad core, 2200 MHz, Krait 400 processor. There is only a measly difference in the clocking speeds. Both these smart phones run on one of the latest graphics processors in the market today, Adreno 330 as well.

Like I said, this one’s a draw.

Battery

Both these smart phones come with a 3,000 mAh battery. But while the Xperia Z Ultra comes with a LI-Ion battery, the LG G2 comes with the slightly better LI-Polymer battery. There isn’t any official news on the standby time of the LG G2 as of now but the Xperia Z Ultra has an amazing standby time of 34 days on 3G and 29 days on 4G.

I’m guessing the LG G2 will have quite an awesome battery as well but I can’t really award this point to either smart phone because of the lack of information on the LG G2.

Price

I believe that the LG G2 will be available in the United States for something between $ 599 and $ 629 (free of contract) depending on which version you choose while the Xperia Z Ultra will be available for anything between $ 650 and $ 700. If I look at this point purely from the “value for money” point of view, the LG G2 is clearly the better option. But, you also have to keep in mind that the Xperia Z Ultra is waterproof and dustproof as well.

Both smart phones have their reasons for their price and it will be unfair to award this point to the LG G2 simply because it is cheaper. The LG G2 may have got this point if it were a tie-breaker but since it’s already in front let’s just call it a draw.

Conclusion

The final score is 2 points to 1 in favor of the LG G2. But, there is an interesting fact about the LG G2 that I have to mention. It comes with 50 GB of Dropbox space for free. I think that should pretty much negate the single point that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra managed to pick up. Keeping that in mind, I feel that the LG G2 is a much better all round smart phone. But, what about wanting to click pictures or record videos underwater? For that, I’m going to have to go with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. What do you want most from your smart phone?
