The Samsung Galaxy Note III is finally here and after all the speculation surrounding Samsung’s latest offering, I can safely say that it has been a big letdown. Yes, the phablet has been improved on in a variety of ways, but most of the improvements are standard upgrades and there is nothing in the phablet really worth going “Gaga” over. That being said, I am going to compare it today with one of LG’s best smart phablet, the LG G2. Will Samsung be able to prove a point with the Galaxy Note III or is it time for the less popular LG to step up in the smart phone market with the LG G2? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

There isn’t too much between both these phablets as far as both size and weight is concerned. While the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm the Galaxy Note III measures 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm. Take into account the fact that the Galaxy Note III has a 0.5” larger display and I think you can pretty much explain the extra length. But the Galaxy Note III is also 8.3 mm wider which makes it easier to view pictures and movies on it. It is also 0.6 mm thinner. In terms of weight, the Galaxy Note III weighs 168 g while the LG G2 weighs 143 g.

Since, the Galaxy Note III is thinner and the LG G2 is lighter this point is going to be a draw.

Display

This is one point where the Galaxy Note III lets us down. It does have a large 5.7” touch screen with Super AMOLED technology. But it has a low pixel density of just 386 ppi. The LG G2 does a much better job here even though it has a smaller 5.2” touch screen. It does however come with IPS LCD technology and a pixel density of 423 ppi. There are phablets with much higher pixel densities available in the market today and considering the fact that the Galaxy Note III is supposed to be a next generation phablet, I expected it to have a better pixel density.

This point goes to the LG G2 for its superior pixel density.

Memory & Storage

The Galaxy Note III is the first phablet that comes with 3 GB of RAM. That means super fast speeds that we haven’t yet seen on any phablet. It also comes with either 32 or 64 GB (although the 64 GB version is doubtful) of internal memory which isn’t anything worth bragging about. The LG G2 comes with 2 GB of RAM and is available with either 16 or 32 GB of internal memory. It lacks memory expansion though whereas the Galaxy Note III offers up to 64 GB in memory expansion.

This point definitely goes to the Galaxy Note III.

Camera

Sony has come out with a 20.7 MP camera on a smart phone, Nokia has a 41 MP camera on one its smart phones and the next generation Galaxy Note III comes with a 13 MP camera. The LG G2 too has a 13 MP camera and while the LG G2 has optical image stabilization, the Galaxy Note III has digital image stabilization. Not really next generation as far as the camera is concerned now is it? But the Galaxy Note III does have one amazing point, it allows video recording at 3840 x 2160 (4K). This means you can shoot much better horizontal videos with the Galaxy Note III.

It may not be ground breaking, but it certainly is an improvement and is enough to award this point to the Galaxy Note III.

OS & Performance

The Galaxy Note III is the first phablet in the world to come out with Android JellyBean 4.3. And apart from being a significant improvement over Android 4.2.2 (which the LG G2 runs on) in terms of battery life, it will definitely have some other handy features as well. The Galaxy Note III comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip and quad core, 2300 MHz, Krait 400 processor while the LG G2 has the exact same specification apart from the fact that it has a maximum clock speed of 2260 MHz. Both phablets run on Adreno 330 graphics processors.

Since the hardware is hardly different, I guess the Galaxy Note III will have to be awarded this point because of its newer operating system.

Battery

There isn’t any information available about either of these phablets as far as the performance of their batteries is concerned. But in terms of size, the Galaxy Note III has a larger battery at 3,200 mAh as opposed to the LG G2 that comes with a 3,000 mAh battery. I don’t think it would be fair to award this point to either phablet until we can actually gauge how well each battery performs but if you want to award the point simply based on size, the Galaxy Note III has a larger battery and should win.

But here, the point is a draw.

Price

The LG G2 has been modestly priced at $ 600 (free of contract) when you consider all you get with the phablet. There isn’t any official news on the price of the Galaxy Note III (free of contract) in the United States as of now but I’m guessing the 32 GB version is going to cost around $ 700.

Still, I can’t really confirm anything so I guess this point is going to be a draw.

Conclusion

It was expected that the Samsung Galaxy Note III would pick up the victory here, but I thought the margin would be a little wider. I know the LG G2 is a decent phablet as well, but still, this is the Samsung Galaxy Note III. It was supposed to set the benchmark. But in reality, it’s a phablet that will just fit into the market without really shaking anything up. I am looking forward to the new features available with the S-Pen though. What do you think?
