Info: The Motorola Moto X vs the LG G2

So LG finally have a smart phone that can run with the big guns. I compared it with the Samsung Galaxy S4 a few days ago and it did pretty well. Now I’m going to compare it with another cell phone manufacturer (Motorola) that is trying to capture a large share of the market withs its latest smart phone, the Moto X. Which manufacturer do you think makes the better smart phone? 6 years ago, Motorola would have definitely won the battle, but today I don’t think Motorola can run away with the prize that easily. Size and weight

It is pertinent to mention that the LG G2 has a larger display than the Moto X. That being said, the Moto X measures 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4 mm while the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm. The G2 is definitely thinner than the Moto X and I don’t know how much credit I can give to Motorola for its length and width. The Moto X weighs 130 g while the LG G2 weighs 143 g. If you ask me, the LG G2 should be awarded this point because if you run the numbers, the G2 is thinner than the Moto X and definitely packs a lot more muscle in its extra 13 g.

Display

As mentioned above, the display size of the LG G2 is a whopping 0.5” larger than the Moto X. So, while the Moto X has a 4.7” AMOLED touch screen the LG G2 has a 5.2” IPS LCD touch screen. In terms of pixel density as well, the Moto X is miles behind at 316 ppi to LG’s 423 ppi. What does this mean? It means the display on the LG G2 is far better than the display on the Moto X. If you were choosing a smart phone based solely on the display, the LG G2 would definitely be the one to buy.

Memory & Storage

Neither of these smart phones offer too much in terms of storage. While the Moto X comes with either 16 or 32 GB of internal memory the LG G2 comes with either 32 or 64 GB of internal memory. None of them allow memory expansion either. In terms of memory, both smart phones run on 2 GB of RAM although the RAM in the Moto X has a clock speed of 500 MHz while the LG G2 has a clock speed of 800 MHz. This means that the LG G2 will run a little smoother than the Moto X.

The LG G2 is wiping the floor with the Moto X. Another point for the LG G2.

Camera

A year ago, the 10 MP camera on the Moto X would have been considered one of the best smart phone cameras out there but today, it is just slightly above average. The LG G2 comes with a 13 MP camera which is quickly becoming the standard among top end smart phones. Both smart phones offer full HD video recording at 60 fps though. One additional feature on the LG G2 is optical image stabilization which once again pulls the LG G2 out in front of the Moto X. Even the 2.1 MP front camera on the LG G2 offers full HD video recording at 30 fps while the 2 MP front camera on the Moto X doesn’t support full HD recording.

The LG G2 has already won this comparison with its fourth point out of four.

OS & Performance

Both these smart phones run on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 JellyBean. This almost confirms that any updates to the operating system would be mutual between the two. But the LG G2 runs on a Quad core, 2260 MHz, Krait 400 processor while the Moto X runs on a Dual core, 1700 MHz, Krait processor. The chip in the LG G2 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 while the Moto X has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (Motorola X8). Even the Adreno 330 graphics processor on the LG G2 is superior to the Adreno 320 on the Moto X. While I can safely say that the LG G2 has the best hardware on the market today, the Moto X would probably be considered average in terms of hardware even 6 months ago.

The fifth point for LG G2. I don’t think any smart phone has picked up 5 points before this. Wow!

Battery

The Moto X has a 2,200 mAh battery which some may consider to be sufficient but when compared to the 3,000 mAh battery on the LG G2 the only word that comes to mind is below average. That being said, the Moto X boasts of a stand by time of 24 days which is one of the highest in the industry today. I don’t have a clue what the stand by time on the LG G2 is going to be although it needs to be close to 24 days.

I will call this one a draw since the Moto X does put up a pretty decent fight even though it has a much smaller battery.

Price

The Moto X isn’t very effectively priced at $ 700. That is too much for a smart phone that still runs on hardware that was released in the beginning of 2012. The LG G2 is rumored to be much more effectively priced though between $ 600 and $ 630. If you had to choose between both smart phones after seeing what each has to offer, you wouldn’t think twice before picking up the LG G2.

And the final point goes to the LG G2 as well.

Conclusion

So, for the first time ever one smart phone has steam rolled another by 6 points to 0. I must say, Motorola should feel embarrassed with the Moto X. Even though LG have released a smart phones on JellyBean 4.1 in the past, this is essentially their first time with a top end smart phone. And after seeing what LG managed to put together with the LG G2 I only have one word for the Motorola Moto X, disappointing!!
