I strongly recommend getting a quad band, or world phone, from T-Mobile. They have the best international rates ($0.99/min from Europe) and good phones. I have looked and tried every major US carrier, and as a frequest traveller myself, I must say that T-Mobile has the best International services. Here are the phones in their current lineup that are quad-band GSM:

Not only were the rates cheaper and the phones nicer, they had MUCH better service than when my family used them in Europe this summer.
