Due to the release of the higher-end Nokia Lumia 800, T-Mobile has announced plans to cut the price of the Nokia Lumia 710 to $50 starting January 11. The Lumia was Nokia's first Windows phone in the U.S. And will provide the carrier with an affordable Android alternative for its customers.
The Nokia Lumia 710 features a 3.7 LCD display, a 1.4 GHz processor and runs the Windows Phone Mango operating system. The device runs on T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ network, includes a 5 megapixel camera and 8 GB of storage and will come in black and white variations. T-Mobile will carry this device exclusively for the majority of 2012, which will allow them to offer the entry-point phone with no competition. Nokia's longterm business plan for attracting new customers is to offer more affordable phones that can be used to attract entry-level customers as opposed to attempting to compete directly against the high-end smartphone market. Because T-Mobile is often the selection for individuals seeking the cheapest wireless service in the U.S., the Nokia 710 will likely be a featured player in many budget cell phone users' decision.
Currently, 60% of American cell phone owners have a non-smartphone and this may be exactly the market that T-Mobile and Nokia are trying to attract.
