I have a 6610 also, and have tried all types of different software to convert MIDI files to the SP-MIDI required by my phone. Most of the free ringtones I can get are in MMF format and when they are converted they sound like rubbish. Is there something I'm missing here. The Nokia Suite sound converter seems to really destroy my MIDI files. Is the Nokia polyphonic capability very average or is there a trick to this program ?
I seem to have answered question with all more questions... whoops...

i dont use the converter, i just copy the midi file straight into the tones folder using the phone browser. Most of them work well and othres dont open (think it is due to length though)

I feel like I was jipped. I thought I was getting the coolest phone and it turns out that it is crap. Go figure and well at leats I never had to pay for it. Anyways. The idea of what you need to do with the Nokia Sound conv program is move the playable racks up untill you get the best combo of sounds that you can use from a prerecorded Midi file. Then you play it as played on phone to see if it sounds good.
Khayman will forget but can still kick your a$$.

Yes there's a trick with the nokia sound converter. The trick is to decide which 4 instruments are most important so that it won't sound rubbish. Play each instrument and then order them according to priority. Then adjust the 4 most important to 4 channels to make them playable on your phones. That's what I do
By the way, what other midi-to-ringtone converters do you know of? I want to try them as well.-Twisted Name Glow

I have the same problem when using Nokia PC Suite's Sound Converter.
In most cases, the result played on my 6610 is bad. I tried to change the instruments order, I tried to select just 4 but the converted midi is just a rubbish.
I noticed, that though I hear the scalable midi on my PC usisng the option imitating the sosund of the phone, when I transfer it to the phone, I rarely hear more than 1 instrument (the one at the very top, in green color).
Does anyone know any other software for that?
