HMD Global, the 2016-founded company behind the resurgence of the Nokia brand, may not have the resources to take on Samsung or Huawei in terms of global smartphone shipments, but when it comes to major software updates, the hierarchy is overturned.

The world heavyweight champion of swift Pie promotions strikes again today, as announced by HMD Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas on Twitter, after already bringing the sweet new OS build to the Nokia 7 Plus and non-Plus 6.1.

The Android One-powered Nokia 6.1 Plus that’s being upgraded starting now ran beta tests for a couple of weeks, which presumably yielded very few and very minor bugs. This stable over-the-air rollout was scheduled for October at the beginning of the month, and with just a few hours to spare, HMD delivered on that promise.

Unfortunately, unlike the “regular” Nokia 6.1, the 6.1 Plus is not officially available in the US. Initially released under the China-exclusive X6 name, the 5.8-incher expanded to a number of international territories in recent months, offering a relatively small notch, respectable Snapdragon 636 processor, 4GB RAM, dual rear-facing cameras, and a single 16MP selfie shooter on a budget.

If you can buy the Nokia 6.1 Plus, now’s definitely the time to do so, with everything from Adaptive Battery tricks to Google Lens integration, and new gesture-based navigation included in this latest Android 9 Pie update.

Next in line are the Nokia 8 and 8 Sirocco, along with the Nokia 3, 5, 6, 5.1 Plus, and yes, even the humble Nokia 1, 2, and 2.1. Take that, Samsung and Huawei.
