As mentioned before, Android 4.4 is the latest mobile OS from Google, and every Android user out there is eagerly waiting for the update to expand its reaches. As usual, official updates are first released on Nexus devices, after which it takes a while before the rest of the non-Nexus smartphones receive the new OS. More so, carrier-branded smartphones are subject to further delays, so in other words, it may take a while before you'll be able to enjoy KitKat on your flagship phone. Alternatively, you can rely on a custom ROM in order to experience Android 4.4.

This is a guide that will allow you to install the latest CM 11 custom ROM on your Cricket Samsung Galaxy S4. CM 11 is based on Android 4.4, so you will have access to all the brand new features. But, being a custom ROM, CM 11 includes several improvements and new features of its own.

Before proceeding however, you need to keep in mind that, while this particular CM 11 ROM is an official CyanogenMod release, that doesn't mean it's an official Google / Samsung release. More so, the ROM at hand it's in its earlier stages of development, hence the "nightly" moniker. As a nightly build, the ROM may contain bugs, but on the bright side, new nightly builds are being released by CyanogenMod on a daily basis. As such, these bugs are constantly being fixed.

    IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING:

    • This is a guide that has been specifically designed for the Cricket Samsung Galaxy S4 (bearing the codename "jfltecri". Don't attempt to apply this particular ROM on any other smartphone or Galaxy S4 variant
    • If you wish to apply CM 11 on your AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4, then please follow this link instead
    • In order to successfully complete this guide, you need to own a rooted Cricket SGS4, running the latest version of CWM or TWRP recovery. (Both recovery methods are explained below)
    • The installation process requires you to apply a factory reset (assuming that you don't run on an earlier CM 11 nightly). As such, it's recommended that you backup your data
    • You can use the "Helium" application to backup app data, the "SMS backup & restore" app to backup your text messages, and the "APN Settings Backup & Restore" to backup your APN Internet settings
    • Your contact list can be easily backed up onto your Gmail account
    • Later on, you will be instructed on how to create a NANDROID backup
    • It's important that you enable USB Debugging before proceeding. To do so, go to "Settings" > "About device". In this menu, tap "Build number" until the "Developer Options" menu becomes visible. Then, return to "Settings", tap "Developer options" and enable "USB debugging"
    • It's crucial that your smartphone doesn't run out of battery during the installation process. Make sure that your handset is at least 60-70% charged
    • This is an advanced guide. In case you brick / damage your phone, or if you lose important data, you can't hold the developers or anyone else responsible
    • Don't skip any steps, and proceed only after you've read all the bullet points above
