How-to: Samsung Galaxy V: Back Up App Data, Contacts and Media Files

Backing Up Applications:

1. While viewing the home screen, press the "Menu" button
2. Tap "Settings" and access the "Accounts" tab
3. Tap "Backup and reset". NOTE: you need to be logged in to a Google account in order to back up your apps. If necessary, tap "Backup account" > "Add account"
4. Mark the check boxes associated with "Back up data" and "Backup account" if necessary

Contact Backup

Backing Up Contacts on a Samsung or Google Account:

1. Launch the "Contacts" application
2. Press "Menu"
3. Tap "Merge accounts" and select to "Merge with Google" or "Merge with Samsung"
4. If necessary, sign in to your Google or Samsung account

Backing Up Contacts on the SD Card:

1. Make sure the SD card is installed on your phone
2. Launch the "Contacts" application
3. If necessary, press "Menu" > "Contacts to display" > "All contacts"
4. Press the "Menu" button and tap "Import / Export"
5. Tap "Export to SD card". Make sure you remember the exported file's name for future use
6. Tap "OK"

Media File Backup

Backing Up Media Files on the SD Card:

1. While viewing the home screen, tap "Apps"
2. Tap "My Files" > "All files"
3. Tap "Device storage". (NOTE: To back up all of your files, press "Menu", tap "Select all" and skip to step 6)
4. Navigate to the folders containing the files you wish to back up. NOTE: Pictures captured with the Camera app should be stored in the DCIM folder, and other media files can be found in "Notifications", "Downloads" folders etc.
5. Mark the check boxes associated with the items you wish to back up
6. Tap the "Menu" icon at the top-right corner of the screen
7. Tap "Copy" or "Move"
8. Tap "SD memory card" and if necessary, navigate to the desired folder
9. Tap "Paste here" or "Move here"

Backing Up Media Files on a Windows PC:

1. Establish a USB connection between your smartphone and computer
2. Swipe the "Status" bar down and mark the "Media device" check box
3. In the AutoPlay window on the computer, click "Open device to view files using Windows Explorer"
4. Navigate to the media files stored on your device
5. Copy the files you wish to back up, and transfer them to the desired backup location on your computer's hard drive
6. After the process is done, safely disconnect your smartphone from the computer

Backing Up Media Files on a Mac Computer:

NOTE: Skip the first 2 steps if Samsung Kies is already installed on your computer

1. Open the Internet browser on your Mac and visit Kies
2. Click "Download for Mac OS" and follow the on-screen prompts to install Kies on your Mac
3. Connect your Galaxy V to your Mac via USB
4. Swipe the "Status" bar down and tap "Connected as a media device" > "Media device"
5. Launch Kies on the Mac
6. In Kies, click the "Back up / restore" tab, followed by the "Backup" tab
7. Mark the check boxes associated with "Music", "Photos" and other types of media files you wish to back up. Optionally, mark the "Select all items" check box
8. Click "Backup"
9. Once the process is done, safely disconnect your smartphone from the Mac
