Re: How to > Put mp3's as ringtones on your phone

In the end none of these phone uploader websites help someone get a ringtone on their Rogers phone. I used the uploader website, uploaded an mp3, downloaded the mp3 from the website onto my phone, was asked to set it as a ringtone? then I was promptly reminded that I couldn't use that song because it isn't drm encoded. So, then you say use the drm encoder software from Sony, well I have lots of experience using the encoder, and it worked great with my Sony phone, but with a Samsung j706 it simply doesn't work. The Samsung j706 tells me that the drm encoded songs are not correct drm files. Guess I will have to sit and wait for someone to figure out a way to get ringtones on a Samsung j706.

i just bought my Samsung m540 (Slyde). I'm with telus.. I tried using the rumkin site to send myself the ringtone as an sms. its under 30 seconds and under 500kb. when i receive the txt message, i can go and listen to the file, but there's no option for saving or setting it as a ringtone or anything. what else can i do?

Re: How to > Put mp3's as ringtones on your phone

I have a Samsung A737 and here is my process for creating and downloading an MP3 file for a ringtone on this model. This may work on other Samsung models but I am not familiar with them. I am sure there are many other procedures and/or ways to do this.

    1) First thing you must know is that the maximum file size for a ringtone is 300K.

    2) You need the following hardware: USB cable with the Samsung connector on one end. I have purchased these on Ebay for about $5.

    3) You need the following software (all are free): Samsung PC Studio 3 (get this from the Samsung web site); Audacity (get this from the Audacity web site); Winamp (get this from the Winamp web site). I do not provide the details of how to perform the operations listed below, but with a little reading and experience using these it's not too complicated.

    4) You need an MP3 file. There are many places to get these. I try to get a small MP3 file to begin with but any size will do. I have downloaded some of them from the Audiko web site.

    5) Open the MP3 file in Audacity and select the section you want to have for a ringtone. Keep this less than 20 seconds, remember the 300K max. Save the file in another location on your PC, as it will have the same file name as the original. Close Audacity.

    6) Open the saved file in Winamp and right click on the file name. Select View Info. You will see two tabs, ID3v1 and ID3v2. Select the ID3v2 tab and click on the block that says "Copy to ID3v1". Close winamp. Verify the file size is less than 300K. If not go back to step 5 and remove a small portion of the MP3 file, then you must do step 6 again.

    7) Connect your cell to the USB port. You will need to turn off Bluetooth Activation and make sure the USB Mode is set to PC Studio.

    8) Open Samsung PC Studio and in a couple of seconds the phone should show connected. If not, verify the options is step 7 or you could have problems with your USB port. Open the Multimedia Manager and go to Files>Get Files. Find the file you saved above and select it. This puts it in the PC Studio application. Highlight this file and click on "To Phone" in the top right of the window. The file should download to the phone. Then you just need to set it as the active ringtone.

I know some will say you can edit the ID Tags ID3v1 & ID3v2 in Audacity but I have tried that and for some reason it doesn't work. As a matter of fact, if you look at the ID Tags in Audacity, both will already be populated but V1 will not be in Winamp. I have found that if V1 is not populated and you download the file to the phone, it will not work. When you try to set it as a ringtone, it will tell you the data is incorrect. I am not technical enough to explain that.

But what carrier are you with? My experience is that Rogers only permits drm encoded songs, and nothing else.

Service is with AT&T, but it has always been my understanding that the type of ringtone file format was dependent on the phone not the carrier.
