    Hi all,

Firstly, I dont know if this is even possible.. I guess it just seems to me that it should be (in a perfect world that is...)

Secondly, I've not done this, nor anything like it, previously - so forgive me if my terminology is somewhat dubious.

I have a Sony-Ericsson m600i which I purchased 'on contract' through "3" (australia). Not realising what I was doing at the time... this phone is a "proprietary" phone. By that I mean it is "locked" to "3".. but not a simlock requiring a code.. the symbian OS has 'suffered' minor changes from three, which include the ability to "unlock" the phone with a simple code.

I'm ranting I know but... the only change to the O/S is to route the "@" button to "planet 3" the telco's online services page. I wouldnt really care about that.. except that it involves changing the O/S, and forgoing the ability to install symbian firmware upgrades. I could conceivably install firmware upgrades from the telco, but they havent bothered to release any AT ALL since the phone's initial release in australia. I have experienced (and contintue to experience) numerous problems with this phone, and looking in to each and every issue I discover that it could be fixed by installing the latest firmware update - you can understand my frustration.

With that in mind, though I've not been able to find any info about it, it would seem to me that it should be possible to overwrite this poxy pseudo-symbian O/S with the real one which was shipped with everyone else's m600i. I realise there are numerous advertised services which claim to be able to "unlock any phone" for a small fee.. but I figure that if 'they' can do it, then I should have the technical knowhow to do it, and would derive immense satisfaction from doing so.

Any advice? can anyone point me in the right direction?
    TIA

Have you given the Sony Ericsson Update service a go? THat gives you the option to both update your phone or to re-install the current firmware. It will stay branded, but that should rid you of your troubles.
