Karl Malone's decision due soon
By JOHN NADEL, AP Sports Writer
February 7, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- If Karl Malone decides to play again, it probably will be for the San Antonio Spurs, his agent said Monday.
Malone will make an announcement about his future before the All-Star break. The All-Star game is Feb. 20 in Denver.
``If he would choose to play, the likeliest candidate would be the Spurs, which is a team he almost played for a year and a half ago,'' Dwight Manley said. ``He's already basically retired because he's not playing. That would be a big step for him, to essentially come out of quasi-retirement and play.
``There are two possibilities. He's leaned toward staying where he already is. Where he goes forward, only he knows. He'll say that real soon. I'm not in the job of speculating. It's out of my hands. It's going to be what it's going to be.''
Malone opted out of his $1.65 million contract following last season, making him a free agent. He and his family live in nearby Newport Beach.
San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said last Thursday he hadn't spoken with Malone since the Christmas holidays, but made it clear the Spurs were interested in his services.
Manley said in October that his client wasn't ready to play, but if he returned, it would only be with the Lakers.
That changed late last year after Malone was accused by Kobe Bryant of making a pass at his wife. Malone, through Manley, denied the accusation and apologized to Bryant and his wife for any remarks she might have considered inappropriate.
whats up with this guy? last year he thought he could get a free ride off of Shaq & Kobe to a championship, and now it looks like he wants to mooch off Duncan's work
whatever happened to winning your own championship?

Jazz: Malone to announce retirement Sunday
By DOUG ALDEN, AP Sports Writer
February 11, 2005
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- There will be no NBA career scoring record for Karl Malone. No championship ring, either.
The Mailman is retiring, having come up short in his quest for both during his 19-year career.
The 41-year-old Malone will announce his retirement Sunday, the Jazz said Friday, deciding against making one more run at an NBA title. He will hold a news conference Sunday at the Delta Center -- the arena where his 1997 and 1999 league MVPs are celebrated with signs below the upper deck.
Malone has scored 36,928 points, just 1,459 behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record.
Malone spent all but one of his 19 seasons with the Jazz, signing with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent before last season. He made the move so he could make one more run at the ring that eluded him in trips to the NBA Finals in 1997 and '98.
Malone made it to the finals again with the Lakers, but came up empty. Detroit beat Los Angeles in five games.
Malone teamed with guard John Stockton for 18 seasons with Utah to form one of the NBA's greatest duos, leading the Jazz to the finals twice but losing to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls each time.

Mailman, I wish you all the best. Yes he deserved a ring, but the Bulls were better.

He may deserve a ring for being a good player. But he sure is a cry baby.
