I have a new sprint contract (fair and flexible) and was told 'roaming' is free.
is this true or is it a smear campaign of the truth (ie is roaming ALWAYS free?)
How could you tell if roaming was free or not on your phone.

Re: roaming
Hi there, please check the following thread for your answer. Pay careful attention to Tammyt's last post in the thread, the one where she talks about the "fine print". I have the Fair & Flexible plan and I don't pay for roaming.

Re: Is roaming really free, or is there a catch?
thanks for the link, i always wondered that too, because my phone still makes me accept the roaming charges when i make roaming calls, but my mom just told me to accept it, but sprint still won't charge me. it always seemed shady.

Re: Is roaming really free, or is there a catch?
Even if the customer is not paying the roaming fees, the carrier is still being charged for their customer to roam.
So basically, if you're using a Verizon cell site, Sprint will still get charged roaming fees by Verizon. The telcos simply have chosen not to forward these charges (in most cases) onto the customer.
The reason probably being that the average customer doesn't know if they're using their own telco's cell site or not. There are ways to find out, but as I said, the average customer won't have the technical knowledge, or the time, to figure it out.
So to avoid upset customers, who legitimately can't tell the difference between who's cell site they're using, the telco's have chosen not to charge their customers roaming fees.
That said, if the roaming is extremely excessive, I've seen circumstances where customers have been billed.

Re: Is roaming really free, or is there a catch?
thanks guys.
I was suspicious...of what sprint meant by 'free'
I don't think I will need the roaming feature that much but it is nice to know that if I do use it occasionally it won't cost me...

Re: Is roaming really free, or is there a catch?
haydeno, that's not correct.
Just to repeat what I posted in that other thread you didn't read:
The old Free and Clear plan, if you paid the extra $5 for the "America" pack, allowed to to roam for 50% of your used minutes.
If you had a 2000 minute plan, only used 1600 minutes of it in one billing cycle, you would be allowed 800 of those minutes to be roaming without extra charges. If you roamed over half your usage, you would be billed for each minute of roaming.
The new Fair & Flexible plan allows unlimited roaming, period.

On the F&F plans that are now being added your roaming is free. So if you just got a plan or just changed your plan to a F&F your roaming is free.

Re: Is roaming really free, or is there a catch?
When I signed up w/ Sprint (approx 5 years ago), nights and weekends start at 8pm.... unfortunately "free roaming" wasn't an option then. I would love to switch over but don't want to give up my 8pm cutoff for daytime minutes.

If you're out-of-contract, you're not tied down to them anymore and they will go the extra mile to get you locked in for 2 more years.
