Symbian is an operating system for smart phones, similar to Windows Mobile. It's also the most prevalent O/S for smart phones, according to Wikipedia (citing a 2007 source) it had 67% of the market share.

It's just okay in my opinion. I've had two Symbian phones, a Samsung g810 (current phone) and a Nokia N-95. Though my Windows Mobile phone crashed all the time, I felt generally that it was better.

symbian seams to get lots of stick from people who dont have one or have never used one you find. It works great and alloys you to run things like tomtom from your phone. I love not having to carry a mp3 player, a phone, and tomtomt and a camera when my phone does a good job of the lot!

Nope, it runs on a proprietary OS.

Thanks for responding. I was hoping it had java or symb so I could find a text reader application that would work on the phone. Surprisingly there isn't a simple text reader on it even though you can save notes. I want to be able to import text files and read them.

    I'll keep searching.

    Re: What is symbian?

Symbian OS is the leading operating system (OS) designed for mobile devices and smartphones, with associated libraries, user interface, frameworks and reference implementations of common tools, originally developed by Symbian Ltd. It was a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed.

In 2008, the former Symbian Software Limited was acquired by Nokia and a new independent non-profit organisation called the Symbian Foundation was established. Symbian OS and its associated user interfaces S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) were contributed by their owners to the foundation with the objective of creating the Symbian platform as a royalty-free, open source software. The platform has been designated as the successor to Symbian OS, following the official launch of the Symbian Foundation in April 2009. The Symbian platform was officially made available as open source code in February 2010

    Re: What is symbian?

Symbian OS is used on Nokia 5800 on all Nokia smartphones, and smartphones many other manufacturers as Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG. Symbian OS is open for third-party development by independent software vendors, corporate IT departments, network operators and Symbian OS licensees.

    Re: What is symbian?

Android and Symbian are both open source, just that android is closed for development. despite the fact that both are open source, Symbian as they claim to be open source, isnt a reality to fill the consumers/developers for any apps that might have been in use in mobile devices. Google android has been the alternative of the manufacturers from apple and the declining MS market. Im not sure, why Nokia is shifting to Microsoft instead of keeping the Symbian OS/ any thought?

To make a long story short it seems as though Nokia's New CEO, Stephen Elop, has sacrificed Nokia and it's potential to put an open source smartphone on the market that would compete with the existing iphone/android (Google) Monopoly.

    Re: What is symbian?

Symbian OS is an open source operating system for mobile phones primarily used on Nokia advanced or data enabled smart phones. Symbian OS runs exclusively on ARM processors and has evolved from Psion's EPOC which was developed as a rudimentary operating system for early electronic organizers.
