Orange Blackberry

I've just come across a second hand Blackberry, Orange branded, I believe
it's a 7230? Wanted something to make emailing on the move easier until I
can do a proper upgrade.

Naively, I thought with these being the 'in-thing' for email I'd just be
able to input a POP or IMAP server, an SMTP server and away we go. Not so
simple it seems..

Can someone in the know give me a clue what I need to do to get some form of
email working on one of these? My SIM is data and GPRS enabled already, do I
need anything else provisioning on my SIM to enable BlackBerry use? I get
full signal on the handset, and 'gprs' shows up next to the signal
indicator. I can't find anything at all to do with incoming server settings
in the menus so I'm guessing these use some kind of push method to receive
messages?

Another thing is the bloody web browser doesn't work.. I just get
'Requesting' for an age then a message "Unable to connect to the Internet".
Anyone give me a hand here?

you need to reg at (I think !) www.blackberry.orange.co.uk and get an
email address which you can use to spoof your own acc and then get push
email (you'll need the blackberry pin and the imei of the handset). I
have no idea what'll happen if the last owner has already used the pin
on the site ?

Your own email won't work as the server doesn't do push (very few do and
I think a blackberry will only work with a blackberry server any way. If
that wrong I'm sure someone will jump in and say so !!)

Hi zxy,

Thanks for the help, I'd never have discovered that site otherwise. Tried
registering with the BlackBerry's PIN and IMEI but the last owner has
obviously beaten me to it and it won't allow me to register again. Called
Orange up and they've said there's nothing they can do. Apparantly only the
original owner can register. So a warning to all to stay away from second
hand BlackBerry's!

Unless someone knows how to get Orange to change their mind? (Unlikely!)

I don't mind running my own server to get the thing working, I have suitable
hardware and connectivity so I'll look into that. I'd actually prefer that
over using whatever email address Orange were planning on giving me if I
registered with them.

I've updated the firmware on the handset and now have the familiar APN
settings and all the rest of it so I'm hopeful I'll get something working
here.

You're not going to get very far unless you have lots of cash to spend
- your BES server ties into the mobile network very tightly.

You're much better off running your own AD site with Exchange 2003 SP2
and buying a Windows Mobile 5 device. Of course if you're willing to
go to this expense to get email on your phone...

I think your on a sticky wicket there. the server is run by Blackberry
for Orange. So, I guess, it's Blackberry's rules rather than Orange
(for a change).

BTW, I'm testing one for work and I fully agree, pile of steaming dog
doo doo. It seem to be a device for people who feel that they have to
be available at all times (I like to turn my phone off rather than being
ruled by the damn thing...). Poor phone, poor pda... Let the flames
begin (just my humble opinion).

No flames here - my BlackBerry even has an on/off button on it.

As a corporate communications tools, with over the air sync. of
contacts, tasks, calendar and email - it is very good.
