Help needed - Nokia E61 and wireless LAN setup

Has anyone had an problems when setting up a Nokia E61 for WLAN?

I've tried everything, but no joy. The phone sees the network and I
can input all the details, security etc, but then does not connect to
the WLAN.

The manual says I need to start the web to get it to connect, but this
is a T-Mobile phone and the only application is labelled 'Web & Walk'
and seems to just connect straight through using 3G or GPRS (not sure
which it is using).

So, first, and tips for connecting using WLAN and second, is this
phone somehow locked to using T-M's gateway to the net, so I'll never
be able to browse/download etc using out WLAN and home broadband?

I had this problem with my N80 and discovered the best way to make it work
is to remove all security on the wireless router, get phone connected, put
security back on and edit the details to include the WEP key or whatever
you're using, it worked fine after that.

I haven't got the E61 but being Nokia I suspect it's similar. Go to the
'Services' icon in main menu (this could be the web n walk icon, I don't
have T-Mobile) and select it. If it attempts to connect cancel it then
select 'Options' / 'Settings' / 'Access point' and select 'Always ask.
You'll then be asked each time you attempt to surf the web what connection
you would like to use.

Thanks very much for the advice. I've tried the setup using no
security, but it will not use the WLAN even then. Whenever I hit the
'Web n walk' icon, it jumps straight onto T-Mobile's platform using 3G
or GPRS. Same is true even with the 'Always Ask' setting. It never
asks, just goes straight to the home page that is set up by T-M.

I suspect it is the WNW application which is a doctored browser.

Any other ideas?

Well, things have progressed a little. And I'm a bit worried, though
not sure if I should be.

When I held the menu key to see what apps were running, there were a
couple of instances of the WnW and also an instance of T-Zones. God
only knows how long these have been running for, presumably over 3G
and costing per MB, yes or no?

ANyway, closing all the instances then starting the WnW client again,
it did ask which connection to use and has now picked up my WLAN no
problem, even prompting me for the WPA-PSK key.

My question now is this - is there an easy way to have shown what apps
are running? I don't want the browser client sitting there pumping
traffic over 3G which might be billed. Not even sure what the tariff
is. Also, is there an easy way to close all running apps?

I find it a bit disconcerting that at any one time, there is nothing
obvious to say if the thing is connected over WLAN or 3G and it seems
to switch seemlessly whenever there is not a WLAN signal in range.
Maybe I am missing something.

If you've got the Web'n Walk option then you don't pay anything to access
the web (as long at least that you don't exceed 2BG of data transfer per
month). If you don't have that, 3G data transfer is charged per KB but
leaving a web browser run in the background won't cost you anything as long
as it's not downloading anything. So unless it was refreshing the web page
automtically, it didn't cost you anything while it was in the background
(assuming that WnW and T-Zones is the name of the web browser).

Press and hold the menu key as you did.

No but third party task managers such as BestTaskMan and HandyTaskMan have
such a feature.

Yes there is. If you're connected via either GPRS, EDGE or 3G, a small icon
with 2 arrows one below the other appears at the top left corner of your
screen, just below the antena icon. If you're connected via wifi, a icon
appears at the top right corner of your screen (it's got 4 small squares
forming a bigger square, with a padlock icon beside it if the network is
secured).

Thanks for explaining that. There is the Web N Walk option on the
phone, so I assume we are on a tariff with the 2GB limit, which should
be more than enough. That's the problem when you are given a phone
from work - not knowing the exact tariff.

My fault I'm afriad. I saw the logo in the top right corner, but not
in the top left since the screen protector film was still there.

If I were you, i'd check with T-Mobile CS about that. It's likely that they
install their Web'n Walk application on all their phones regardless of
whether or not you've subscribed to their Web'n Walk plan. If you haven't,
you'll pay £7.50/MB and have a nasty surprise when you'll get your first
bill at the end of the month.
