A swipe card will do no good in actually activating the SIM for use.
I suspect the OP has a disconnected SIM card myself.

My sim I use when i go on holiday was actually reading unregistered, this
was due to the fact when i bought it i didnt read the conditions about
having to use it once every 6mth, i thought having credit on it was enough
for 12 mth, so had to buy a new one, I am thinking this is whats wrong with
the OP, if it was active previously, then mayby it has expired.

Sorry! But not much more to tell. I found it buried under junk in the
kitchen. I charged it up, switched it on> Searching> Unregistered SIM
Card.
That's it!

It might have inscriptions like 'Orange' 'Vodafone' or 'Virgin' on it...

I didn't think of that. Thank you.

I opened the phone. Battery. Removed battery. Opened little hinged door.
SIM card with O2 and four 4 digit numbers, a 3 digit number and PP4 on
it.
Will they need these numbers?
Now all I need is the O2 phone number...

The network to which the SIM belongs.

Not all of them are clearly marked. I have an original Cellnet one dating
back 6 years or more. It is totally free of all markings apart from a
serial number (the clued-up might be able to tell the network from it, but
I can't). I only know it's Cellnet (O2 now) as I bought it originally. If
I were to give it to someone I doubt they'd easily know, and as we all
know numbers can be ported so that's no clue either.

Which isn't always obvious (see my other post).
