3 Skypephone, does it have modem facility?

As the title, can I buy one of these and get it hooked up to a pc to use
    their PAYG 3g broadband service?

    Thanks

Apparently yes, but it would be much simpler to go buy say a used
Nokia 6630 (which is fairly easy to unlock with BB5 unlocker)
for about the same or less money, with a standard DKU2 usb datalead
and download the latest Nokia datasuite with it's one button connect wizard

You might be right, but on the other hand, if you dont have the data-lead
and you dont want to mess around, would it not just be simpler to buy one of
these and hook it up to the PC using the modem facility (assuming you are
correct and it does support modem features) and just use that? I think I
might be able to borrow onw of these Skypephone things to test it out
(possibly) and see how well it works. Is it true I could get reasonable
speeds with a 1GB cap for a fiver a month?

The reason I am looking at these is because a mate of mine has bought a
couple of them one for him and one for his GF, and I asked him about the
modem feature and he didn't know.... I assume it wont do the turbo modem
function you talked about ealier in the thread, but I assume it should be
    good for 400kbps then?

Neither a 6630 or the skypephone have a turbo modem so no advantage there.

6630 has bluetooth, but i found the DKU2 usb lead which normally comes
with a 6630 or you can get for a couple of quid on ebay gives better
    connetion speed

Yes, you'll have to set up the 3 dialup settings for it in windows network
    settings

Steve, if I bought one of these Skypephones (after I have tested it with my
mates unit), how much would it cost me to run the phone? I would only want
it for data (I would probably never use the phone as a phone.....) Just as
a modem.... Is there a minimum amount that the phone would need topping up
by each month? Over and above the 4 quid for data use?

    Thanks Steve

Minimum is 5 quid a month which you allocate out of your top op
    to internet monthly.
Or you can allocate internet daily or weekly which i think is
    50p and £2.50

BTW 3 email on 3 internet is charged at 12p per email sent
    on the standard SMTP port

So instead use googlemail on it's SSL ports to avoid the charges ;-)

Broadband is 10quid a month, again you go into planet3 wap
and allocate it out of your top up.
The system is very user choice orientated

Sounds a reasonable deal. to me, and I assume once you have paid your fiver
(for a month) that ties you to the 30 day deal, so if you went over the 1GB
limit, you couldn't pay another 5 quid until after the 30 day period had
expired? Meaning you would have to pay the higher costs (per MB) for the
rest of the 30 day period I assume. Having said that, 1GB is quite a lot of
data for general browsing. Steve I assume you are already using this
system? Is the speed reliable, ie do you get the 300-400kbps most of the
time, and are there any restrictions on where you can visit on the web?

I am going to borrow that phone from my mate this weekend (hopefully) to
have a look and a play with it. Sounds like it could be just what I am
looking for when out and about. One last question, does the allocation of
your credit have to be done on the phone itself?, or can it be done online
    using a PC??

    Thanks again...
    Terry

I dont think the 3Skypephone has a modem facility on it, could be wrong
    though. Any takers?
Would it not make more sense to just buy a 3 ZTE USB Modem? You can get
    them for 38pounds+VAT now.

It does and can be used via USB or Bluetooth.

Some people prefer the Huawei E220 for connecting things like the ASUS
EeePC, Wi-Fi routers running Linux etc

But note it doesn't support HSPDA (turbo 3G).

    FWIW
I tried quite a few times to get the Skypephone's e-mail client to work with
    Googlemail with little success.
And that's putting in the different ports numbers required.

It works on other phones with their built-in e-mail clients.
Anyone else get this problem ?

Google's mail client works OK on the Skypephone.

I suspect 3s Skype node doesn't pass Skypes email
