Is it be ok to just use an adapter on phone charge which I stick in
the car cigar lighter?
I can buy an attachment which changes the 3.5mm power plug to a 2mm
plug in order to fit my Nokia 6300.
Am concerned that this might be a bit of a bodge and features like
full-charge sensing doesn'rt work properly.

Re: Plug on car power adaptor (for Nokia)
The converter cable works fine, as the sensing is in the phone, not in
the charger.
But check if the adapter can deliver the current your phone needs.
There are some electronics in the adapter, which all have limits. I
bought a cheap adapter which proved to be able to load a simple phone,
but not a more complex one. Just like some chargers can charge every
Nokia phone and the cheaper ones can't deliver the current.

An old ACP-7X charger (the heavy ones that everyone has/had) + CA-44
adaptor refuses to charge my E65. The ACP-12X charger works just fine
with the adaptor.
