Nexus 5 custom notification sounds?

I'm trying to get a custom notification sound for (specifically for text messages). Does anyone have tips on how this can be done?

Have you tried using an app like RingDroid?

You may need to save the mp3 file of the sound that you want to the notifications folder in your root directory. Then while in the messaging app go to menu > settings > notification settings and the option to 'select ringtone'.
