I noticed that every once in a while the phone gets really really hot. Like, I can't hold it hot.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

This will happen when a program is running for an extended period of time. I would check to see what is running in the background and close it when this happens.

Top-tier smartphones can heat up pretty bad if you're running a demanding application, such as a 3D game.

If you're not running anything on-screen or even in the background, and the phone gets incredibly hot for no reason, then you should probably contact tech support.

I used to be worried about my phone as well. When I've purchased my HTC One X last year, I got worried that the phone was getting really hot when playing games, and using an application I have found out that the device has even reached 50-55 degrees Celsius. However, the Tegra 3 chipset (and Tegra processors in general) run at higher temperatures to begin with.

But, I've contacted support and they've told me that those values are to be expected from this particular smartphone. They told me that if I wish, they can replace the smartphone with a new one (I had it for a week or so) and I did replace it, but the new unit acted the same way, so I stopped worrying.

In other words, depending on what you're doing on your smartphone, higher temperatures should be normal. However, if you're not running any apps or if the smartphone gets incredibly hot, then you can always contact support if you're worried. They can also inform you on how to find out the temperature of the internal hardware.

Alternatively, you can download an app and check the temperatures yourself

(Also, playing demanding games or even talking to your phone while charging it up will result in higher temperatures. I tend to unplug my device if I wish to make a longer phone call or play a game)
