WARNING! If you factory reset your phone, all personal data stored on the internal memory will be removed, including contacts, downloaded content, images, applications, ringtones etc. Furthermore all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: You can visit this thread for a guide on how you can back up and restore data on the Nexus 5X before master resetting it.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Launch “Settings”
  3. Under “Personal”, tap “Backup & reset”
  4. Tap “Factory data reset”
  5. If your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter the PIN / password etc. to proceed
  6. Tap “Reset Phone” to confirm

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case you are unable to reset the phone via Settings as detailed above, you should be able to reset it from the Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses. To do so:

  1. Turn off the device
  2. Press and hold “Power” and “Volume down” simultaneously
  3. In the menu that should appear, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Recovery”
  4. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  5. Once an Android appears on the screen, press and hold “Volume Up” and “Power” at the same time
  6. From the “Android system recovery” menu, press “Volume Down” repeatedly to highlight “wipe data / factory reset”
  7. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  8. Use “Volume down” to highlight “yes – delete all user data”
  9. Press “Power”
  10. After the phone resets, “reboot system now” should be highlighted
  11. Press “Power” to restart your device

Check for Software Updates:

NOTE: Once you have reset your phone you should check if newer software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Open the “Settings” menu
  2. Scroll down to, and tap “About phone”
  3. Go to “System updates”
  4. Assuming that an update is available, follow the on-screen steps to download and install it
